WTF is going on here?

I just received spam about a program that will let you send out spam mail (which I think it pretty low) but the really wacky bit, apparently I sent this to myself?

Could this be a because of a virus or spyware program?

Or is there any way someone could have spoofed the sender address?

Yup, sender addresses are extremely easy to fake.

...Which you think could be pretty dangerous or easily abused...

Which is exactly why they spoof the from field with your address. But realistically, how many times do you send yourself mail from the same account? I don't, so one of my spam filters is on my own address when it appears in the from field.

A fun one that a client got earlier this week was disguised as a bounce-back from postmaster@theirdomainname.org -- there isn't one. Or was that a virus? Same thing as far as I'm concerned. Anyway, they've added postmaster to their spam filters.

Actually I send myself emails all the time. It's easier than using floppy disks to transfer small ammounts of data.

Yeah, I send emails to myself all the time. I might be at work on my lunch break and send myself an email of a certain page or something.

I get spam all the time and they just spoof the email accounts. Really annoying!

I'm on my own spam list, I get spam from me like *all* the time! I also have several accounts that let me get mail from [anything]@mydomain.com, so I use one of those if I want to send myself a link from somewhere else.

I email myself stuff occasionally, but never *from the same account*. I'm famous for firing up Hotmail on a client's PC to send home details of our next appointment. If through some miracle I didn't lose paper notes, I'd forget to look at them anyway and still miss the apointment. (That happened just last week.)

Larger things I just FTP to my web server. Even IE is a good enough FTP client for a one-off upload from a friend's or a client's PC.

Since I lose disks too, (and anything else that can't be surgically implanted), the only time I carry around disks is if I need to transport more than 150MB or the client doesn't have broadband. Those things almost never happen.

Hmmm.... I'm thinking I should set up a personal little notice board for myself on my server, somewhere where I can leave my quirky notes and maybe even upload files via http...

Cone to think of it that would be perfetc, but chances are I won't get around to it untill some time next year! Heh.

I hardly ever email myself, I do ftp notes and things to mywebserver quite a lot. Personally I like using the command prompt much better than using IE, but I guess if you're not on a windows computer IE would be your next best bet.

Yeah, the biggest problems for me is moving data around at Uni. None of the Mac's have floppy drives which shits me to no end.

I'll agree w/ CPrompt, though it's rather late to be agreeing (hehe). I e-mail myself all the time, especially if I'm at work and find some really cool page that I want to look at in more detail at home. Or if I don't want to forget to do something...I'll send mail to like 3 of the e-mail addresses I use the most often and hope I check them before I have to do it. lol. I have a calendar which usually has everything on it but do I ever LOOK at that when I need to get something done? Of course not!
