polyglot: A person who speaks more than one language

In our case:

quote:
polyglot: A program that is written in more than one language simultaniously.

I found this site today:
http://www.nyx.net/~gthompso/poly/polyglot.htm

and liked all the programs; but @ best, this one:

hope you like it.

Interesting. So the one that you like best is a COBOL, Pascal, Fortran, and C program, all in one? Strange!

I didn't know you could do that kind of thing. Are the syntax pretty much the same for the those languages or do they just throw out the stuff that they don't recognize?

How do you call a person that can speak many languages?

A polyglot.

How do you call a person that can speak three languages?

A trilingual guy.

How do you call a person that can speak two languages?

Bilingual.

And how do you call a person that can speak only one language?

An american.

That would be "what do you call.." oh wise one. "How you call" them would be dependant on things like names or telecommunications.

viol: only Americans are allowed to make jokes like that.

And I know that it doesn't apply to at least a few Americans here... we seem to have a good number of expats hanging around.

Thank you, bitdamaged, for justifying their argument... *sigh* (Yes, I realize that you were probably mostly joking...)

And while we're at it, what about China? Imagine where they would be if they clung to dreams of glory and refused to learn foreign tongues...

Bit: you rock hehe.

Nah, actually, I love being an American but what makes us rock (imho) is that we're such a wide-ranging group of people. The area I grew up in was a mix of Vietnamese, Korean and other Asians, Hispanics, Heinz-57 White people like myself (iow: I'm a mix of everything under the sun including but not limited to: English, Swedish, German, French, American Indian, Dutch, Italian, Black Irish, etc.) and more. My junior high was 40% hispanic 40% Asian, 10% everything else, my high school 30% Asian, 30% Hispanic, 30% white, 10% everything else. It's very cool to have an opportunity to have such a variety of cultures all around you. My mom's brother and sisters have married all sorts of different people: Japanese, Hispanic, Black, White, etc. I think it's really neat that my cousins look like me and yet have features that are specific to the culture their other half is from. It's pretty darn neato.

^_^ So I remain, Proud to be an American!

Genevieve<---that's me!!

Wowzers! o.O

That joke was told to my wife while in class, by a Harvard american teacher.
About the "how" or "what" words, I'm not a native english speaking guy so I make mistakes while using English. In my language, you'd use "how", so, that's why I got confused.
