Just a quick update for those more interested in my life than their own...
I spent Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday afternoon moving out of the evil apartment and into the new digs. Things went rather well, considering the fact I have way too much crap. Only minor damage to the Uberdesk, which is normal, taking into account its size and complexity. I'm turning in the evil keys today.
Only a couple things bothering me about the new place: the tub backs up so I'm standing in an ankle-deep pool of my own filth when I take a shower, and there are ants wandering around on the kitchen bar and near the fridge. I tried drain cleaner in the tub, but it didn't seem to work, so I'll report that to the office today. I put out traps for the ants last night and there were a couple of dying ants about this morning, but they aren't flocking to the traps like they were when I did the same in a different apartment a few years ago. If the ants aren't gone by tomorrow, I'll spray the kitchen with a can of poison and hope I don't die, too.
I realized the above paragraph makes the place sound like a hole, so I'd like to clarify and say it's a great place. Nice complex, lovely hot tub, great big bedroom/office with a wet bar, deep walk-in closet...
Unfortunately, it's not the apartment I originally wanted, which is in the complex next door. That place has a 24-hour indoor pool with steam rooms, plus the unit I was going to take had a great view of a wooded creek. However, just a few days before I was going to move in, I discovered they were using some independent cable provider instead of AT&T like the rest of the city. AT&T charges $40 for a 1Mbit broadband connection; Coserv, as it's called, charges the same for 128k! They wanted $150 for 1Mbit! The apartment management (and apparently everyone living there) is oblivious to the speed and price differences; they've never had anyone bring it up before. Needless to say, I told them to shove it until they get the sense to go with a provider that doesn't rip people off.
Of course, my new place is just full of boxes (full of too much crap), so I'll have to spend this week unpacking and getting things back in order. The desk is going up first, of course, although I don't have an Internet connection just yet. The kitchen will have to wait till I get rid of the ants, which means about half of the boxes will remain unopened for a while. That's okay, though, because there's plenty of room under the desk to sleep, and with no TV anymore, I don't need a clear viewing area.
