Just a quick update for those more interested in my life than their own...

I spent Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday afternoon moving out of the evil apartment and into the new digs. Things went rather well, considering the fact I have way too much crap. Only minor damage to the Uberdesk, which is normal, taking into account its size and complexity. I'm turning in the evil keys today.

Only a couple things bothering me about the new place: the tub backs up so I'm standing in an ankle-deep pool of my own filth when I take a shower, and there are ants wandering around on the kitchen bar and near the fridge. I tried drain cleaner in the tub, but it didn't seem to work, so I'll report that to the office today. I put out traps for the ants last night and there were a couple of dying ants about this morning, but they aren't flocking to the traps like they were when I did the same in a different apartment a few years ago. If the ants aren't gone by tomorrow, I'll spray the kitchen with a can of poison and hope I don't die, too.

I realized the above paragraph makes the place sound like a hole, so I'd like to clarify and say it's a great place. Nice complex, lovely hot tub, great big bedroom/office with a wet bar, deep walk-in closet...

Unfortunately, it's not the apartment I originally wanted, which is in the complex next door. That place has a 24-hour indoor pool with steam rooms, plus the unit I was going to take had a great view of a wooded creek. However, just a few days before I was going to move in, I discovered they were using some independent cable provider instead of AT&T like the rest of the city. AT&T charges $40 for a 1Mbit broadband connection; Coserv, as it's called, charges the same for 128k! They wanted $150 for 1Mbit! The apartment management (and apparently everyone living there) is oblivious to the speed and price differences; they've never had anyone bring it up before. Needless to say, I told them to shove it until they get the sense to go with a provider that doesn't rip people off.

Of course, my new place is just full of boxes (full of too much crap), so I'll have to spend this week unpacking and getting things back in order. The desk is going up first, of course, although I don't have an Internet connection just yet. The kitchen will have to wait till I get rid of the ants, which means about half of the boxes will remain unopened for a while. That's okay, though, because there's plenty of room under the desk to sleep, and with no TV anymore, I don't need a clear viewing area.

Well, look who decided to show up again
Congrats on the new place, hopefully those minor problems will straighten out before too long. Sounds a good bit better than where you just left.

[edit: Party at Wes's new place It needs breaking in.]

Wes, have you ever considered an online journal? I know you have Texas Twisted (which, btw, I found quite interesting--just wish I had seen it before I passed through Texas last summer), if you had something that chronicled your daily adventures, I would read it.

Well, there used to be Biased Observations and Obligatory Rants, although that was really just me complaining about things.

I've thought about a journal, but I barely have time to get actual work done, let alone write about all the stuff that gets in the way of my getting work done. But, I suppose this place is really my journal; anything big that goes on, I write about here.

Anyway, about the apartment: I tried two bottles of Foaming Pipe Snake to clear out the tub, but my next shower still backed up. However, that shower must've flushed the gunk through that the FPS loosened up, because this morning, there was no backup! Woohoo!

I turned in the damage inventory to the office yesterday (which was refreshingly short of notations) and mentioned the ants. The traps seemed to have taken out a few select crawlies, but the property manager said the exterminator was coming by tomorrow anyway, so he could spray my kitchen and my bathroom before I get anything put away. (His next stop by wouldn't have been for two weeks.) Woohoo!

Now I just need to finish putting the desk together, get the cable turned on and put down shelf paper.

Oh, and get a girlfriend... >sigh<
