I always wondered this...

Why do a lot of people use ICQ? I have an ICQ number but never use it.

I use MSN and AIM. What's so special about ICQ that makes it better than the others?

Lets all be honest here, the reason why ICQ is so cool, is because it AINT AOL, and it AINT MSN.

(and there's more features)

I liked AIM up to about 4.5. After they added direct connect, it just went downhill. Don't even download version 5.0, it's worse. They made it harder to edit your buddy list in favor of silly things like getting the news in your buddy list window.

The only advantage it has is that you can see when someone's typing without direct connecting to them.

People like Q 'cause of the "uh-oh!".
They may never admit to it.
But it's true.
Ohh.... and that typewriter noise too. That makes more people use Q.

Well the only reason I really use AIM is because lots of my friends use it, and icq is like really amazingly insecure.

The reason why is it's more refined and there are multiple ways of running it. Most of the other IMs have one way of things being done - its far less personal that way.

That and it's been around longer

The only bad thing about ICQ (in my opinion - and other than being owned by AOhelL) is it's inability to navigate an incoming chat/file transfer when you're behind a router. Of course many of the other IMs can't even send chat/file requests let alone recieve them when behind a router.

Just my humble opinion.

Oooh... I done turned that damned typewriter sound off after about 4 seconds of novelty amusement. The 'ut-oh' is still there, of course... has been all these years I been using it.

I turned the typewriter sounds off as well. The uh-oh is gone as well. I like it. I use windows messenger as well, but most of my contacts are in ICQ.

I've never had either noise

The only reason I signed up to ICQ is that a number of inmates (you know who you are) hassled me into it

1st thing I did when I got ICQ was turn off all sounds.

2nd thing I did was kill keyboard shortcuts.

Nothing like trying to inverse a selection in Photoshop and having ICQ pop up instead

(but yes, Michael, I turned it off because I liked the uh-oh *too* much...)

"ditto" DL-44
I like the float function in ICQ... I usually have one of my more important contacts floating somewhere on my desktop.

Me, my preferences: no sounds (none), no auto-popup, split window display, no shortcuts.

Is anyone using the broadcast features (or is it Active List) with ICQ? I was joined in one briefly, but the fellows server was up, then down..

I had to turn off the sounds because my roomie and I sleep at different times so I'd be up and talking on ICQ and she'd be trying to sleep....but when we're both up...they are on!! I love that "uh-oh!" and the typewriter is just too cool!!

hehehe. But I gotta admit, the only reason I ever dled ICQ in the first place was because I was in the Alliance of Mortov for Utopia (an on-line game) and everyone in AoM had ICQ. Most of my friends from hs and college and work and what-not have AIM. But ICQ is fun. I like that you can see what people are typing WHILE they type it (hehe) and that sorta stuff....
