I surfed around and stumbled upon a few resources that some of you might find interesting

First of all a site regarding how the human eye works (pretty relevant for us designers)
It contains everything from actual physics to colour and shape perception. http://www.yorku.ca/eye/toc-sub.htm

Then I found a page regarding Gestalts laws of perception
How different shapes interact with each other and what parts the human brain readily completes by itself.
You get to read up on the Law of proximity, The law of good continuation and so on. Quite an interesting read. http://www.unc.edu/courses/psyc21/3-15-99/

Now go read and play

LOL Grumble

I'm not very familiar with Gestalt myself, but I think he was some old psychologist.
(However, I'm not sure at all)

I can't seem to find the translation for the Swedish meaning of Gestalt, but nevermind

This is what Google tells me about Gestalt:
-------
Gestalt psychology is a movement in experimental psychology that began just prior to World War I. It made important contributions to the study of visual perception and problem solving. The approach of Gestalt psychology has been extended to research in areas such as thinking, memory, and the nature of aesthetics.

Main Entry: ge·stalt
Pronunciation: g&-'stält, -'shtält, -'stolt, -'shtolt
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural ge·stalt·en /-'stäl-t&n, -'shtäl-, -'stol-, -'shtol-/; or gestalts
Etymology: German, literally, shape, form
Date: 1922
: a structure, configuration, or pattern of physical, biological, or psychological phenomena so integrated as to constitute a functional unit with properties not derivable by summation of its parts

It's kinda an interesting psych topic where by people interpret cetain sets of data as wholes as opposed to discreet parts. This is why it's inextricably linked to something such as art where a collection of lines/forms and colors can bring such an emotional reaction with no concept of the individual parts that are used to create the piece.

Wow, that's a lot to digest, but that's some really good material. I'm definitely going to have to sift through all that.

Noooooooooooooooooo!

Not Gestalt! Anything but that!

Hah. Had to learn that stuff for Uni. Mostly focusing on the nature of aesthetics though. It you can relate to the dribble then it's good but if you don't then it's horrible. Basically it's one of those If you believe then it's good, if not then it's tripe kind things.

Personally, I think it's tripe. But that's just me, and how I see the world just doesn't fit or work with those views. Still, it does get you thinking and I learnt a lot (indirectly) from researching the theory, even though I hated it.

nimraw, what i wanted to say, is that gestalt may be a german word used in english for the same meaning.

well, gestalt is the german word for shape. and so i suspect, that gestalt wasnt a guy or so, but just the abstract noun. but i may be wrong too.
