Now that is an awful lot of extra code!! This explains the odd things WS has been seeing:

The popup code is before even the HTTP header. That means it's *really* unlikely that it's a server problem. I'm still thinking it's a local program. Or maybe some sort of weird evil proxy.

Never had that before.....hhhmmmm looks nasty tho. The cheek of it too!!

Also most of the code is at the top, but look at the bottom:

code:

Hhhmmmm.... nasty crap that.... but I've never had. If I did a data by data packet and file inspection on my computer would be in order right a way!!

Yeah, sorry about that...as I said before, I only get this at work...(IE 5.5), so I had to do it...kinda fast

Sorry about 'bombing' you with it, Ini...should have seperated it better...

The thing is, it's quite irritating...and occurs in every forum that I visit (and perform my duties on...that includes the HTML forum, the main forum, and the phil forum). I have had it in the basement, and in site reviews, the Photoshop forum, big sigs...so...I dunno. Haven't actually tried to see if it only occurs where InSiDeR posts...

Esp. when archiving/deleting threads, this 'pop-up' madness really gets my goat...I would love to see it stopped...

And I think I'll look into the legal aspect of the thing...surely, Doc didn't give his ok for something like this...and probably isn't receiving any money for this...which means that basically, Hypermark is getting 'free' advertising here...

webshaman, this is happening somewhere between your computer at work and the asylum.
It could be a local program on your machine (as has been suggested) or
an evil proxy (please check if your browser is configured to make use of one). (Or an even eviler transparent proxy. But that's rather unlikely.

My best bet would be a local program.

Well, just to set the record straight, this is *not* part of the Asylum codebase, we have no ads here, and no popups for sure! I would place my money on a nasty little EXE file on the system that is inserting stuff like this, probably into most all of your pages. (ie: not just here. Seeing lots of popups all over the place?)

No other sites throwing popups at me...and the asylum experience has not been repeated. ~crosses fingers~

Now don't laugh too hard at this offering but... could those popups have anything to do with 'dragging'
say a hypermart link to the address bar *without* first opening a new browser window
and 'then' dragging the link to the address bar? Some 'artifact' left behind after closing the popup and then 'back button' to the asylum?

Hopefully you hard core coders will understand what I'm trying to say... if not...
like I said 'don't laugh too hard.' I know diddly about coding and think I've just proved it. <lol>

What's up with the horizontal scroll.

InI is correct:

quote:
And it's hard to figure out without a "common demoninator" to the
pop-up incidents you had.

This means we can only take wild stabs in the dark. We really need to get methodical about this. To this end could people please fill in an 'incident report' and post it here:

-----------------

URL: The page you were on when this occured.
OS: Windows/Mac/Linux.
Browser: including the version.
Also running: What other relevant software was also running, IM, file sharing, etc. (i.e its unlkely to be due to MS Word or Explorer or Notepad).
Location: Are you in work? This factor seems to come up every now and again and you often don't have the option to upgrade your browsers to the latest version (I'd guess if you are using PCs you'll be using IE5.x).

-----------------

InSiDeR: I don't see you being let off the hook quite yet - your including a Perl sig swapping script from a hypermart page and some of us being troubled by hypermart popups makes me suspicious that that is the cause but we'll see........

Well, at work I only get those pop-ups here, at the asylum (I think I mentioned that before...). All other sites that I surf (at work), I don't get them. Which is what got me started thinking in this direction...it only happens here, at the asylum. That said, there must be something here that 'triggers' it...otherwise, it would be happening on other sites, as well.

So what, here, is triggering it? Maybe the actual 'thing' is somewhere else...but it is being triggered here, and only here.

Other sites I surf - neoseeker, gamefaqs. I also post there, but I get no 'pop-ups' from Hypermarkt.

Hmmm...update - the pop-ups seem to be gone. I'm not getting them anymore here at work (and never did, at home...). The strange thing is, nothing has changed on the computer here at work.

Oh well, they're gone...just wondering, how that could be...

Sure makes archiving/deleting threads much easier...without pop-ups...

Oh yeah, and congrats Ini, on 3K...

Actually, it *could* come from the Asylum server itself, under one condition: if the server-side UBB scripts themselves had been hacked. But this is extremely unlikely, and certainly couldn't be done just by making a post to the forum (even if the forum allows HTML).
