There's just something about pixel art that makes it "cute". But is it really worth the time doing all that work (and straining your eyes!) just for a pint-sized image? I can't envision how artists can sit down for days @ end creating whole universes of pixel art characters. Ouch!

Hmm, hard to say about that until you've given it a go. I remember when I got my start doing graphics for computers, real pixel-level stuff in 256 colors for old Atari game systems. (Yah, another hobby, heh. =) I used to design all my sprites on big blocky graph paper, with colored pencils! Still, years later I was still able to amaze clients when I could zoom into a picture till the pixels were as big as my thumbnail and pixel by pixel fix an image. Art may be in the brain, but with computer graphics, well, details matter. I just spent the last week hand-crafting all these little teeny foldertabs and bitsy icons for a commercial site, it makes the difference between crap and professional work, you may as well learn.

PS: It doesn't need to be cute either. Check this out... http://weadah.deviantart.com/
PPS: Use the magnifying tool, no eyestrain needed. Patience still required.

Most people who make application skins also do a fair bit of the work on a pixel level.

It's an imporntant skill to have when you need the extra detail.

Many of my first attempts at Computer artwork were done pixel by pixel in Paintbrush (now called MS Paint).

Fun stuff, and the important thing is that you LEARN by doing it.

I remember the C64/Amiga days when I you pixeled full-screen gfx. Mind you, the resolution was a LOT lower back then, and I seriously doubt that I would do it again.

I remember a few pic's where I started out with a sketch on mm-grid paper and then transferred it to the screen pixel by pixel. A good pic would take about 20-40 hours.

Mebbe that's why I need glasses nowadays

I started making computer graphics with paint for windows 3.1. 8 years ago. 'pixeling' is a nice skill, especially when making small pictures, like for websites or interfaces. However. If you want to do bigger pictures, photoshop work is usually much faster. It's nice to be able to do it, and like all things takes prctice to do properly. But when you plan to make a picture bigger than than 64*64 pixels all by hand, you're nuts.
