Preserved Topic: Linux From Scratch (Page 1 of 1)

I was flipping through the LFS book earlier in the day and I was thinking maybe getting one of these going would make a great group project. I've never tried it myself, but the manual seems straight forward and with, say, half a dozen of us Asylumites giving it a go, we could bounce questions back and forth.

Is anyone up for it? Maybe we can bounce the idea around till the weekend before we start? I know theres a few Linux users out there. The books fairly hefty but it can be downloaded in various forms. If you have access to a library printer or something you can print out the entire thing and put it in a binder like I did.

Don't forget that there are also other Unix-like operating systems that can be built from scratch. BSD would be one for example...

wow I would learn so much about my computer from going through that. But I think time will get the best of me. I need to spend it drawing and doing homework. Great link though, I'll have to consider it.

I'm hoping to get a second hard disk installed soon so I'll certainly keep an eye on this even if I don't join in.

Well after some consideration, the BSD idea does seem pretty good. I'm just curious if there are any projects similar to LFS that tells you step by step how to install a BSD system, well from scratch My experience with BSD is very slim, but it is fairly similar to Linux so that shouldn't be a huge problem with me. My biggest reasoning for wanting to do the LFS is because I have the manual in front of me.

Does anyone have any information on building BSD?

I'd really like to join this project but I don't think I have enough time for something like that at the moment

I just got me a copy of SuSE Linux 8.1 and installed it this weekend, but although I love the look & feel and almost everything else SuSE did there I feel that I need to know how exactly all this works before I can start and try to use it instead of Windows. Linux From Scratch seems to be just the right thing there...

But anyway, if you're going to do this anytime soon then it would be cool if you could let us know how it goes and if it's a thing you'd recommend to someone who wants to learn more about Linux without losing his life

Max can you list a BSD from scratch website or something? I've been looking for a little while now, but really haven't come across anything worth mentioning.

I have access to 5-6 "research" computers in the univ's CS lab. However, from what I've read through the manual so far, anyone with a Linux box and a bit of room on their HDD can use it.

I would really like to have a hand in this, but I'm not too sure if I would be able to help at all. Mainly because I don't know a thing about Linux... But it would be a great way to learn it I suppose. I might try something like that for a research project in Software Engineering next semester...

When/If ya'll decide to do this, could ya keep us posted here? I'd like to see this from start to finish...

This sounds like a lot of fun.

Unfortunately, I don't have a spair machine to build the OS on right no.

Hope you will all keep us posted here on how you are doing.

Is zero knowledge about it enough? Actually, not zero, because I've been playing on our SunOS (aka UNIX) systems and am kinda getting a feel for that...
Anyways, I've been halfway trying to find a reason to learn Linux, so this might be just the excuse I need That is, if ya'll don't mind dragging a novice along...

Well I never started a LFS project so I can't be certain, but I think you'll be fine even with zero knowledge. The book is pretty step by step and theres plenty of outlets for questions.

I added a Linux/BSD FAQ last night. Check that out to get started.

It seems to me that we will need a box that will be up 24/7 and someone who has physical access to it to add the kernel. This person will also have to be the Sys Admin and add accounts for all those who are interested. I wouldn't think that it would be feasible if a machine is up just some of the time (dual boot). And would also be cool if it always stays up after completion of the project so that all the people who contributed can still play on *nix. I think that if we can do these two things, then we can debate on what OS to install.

Eh we aren't building a server. The operating system is going to go on our personal computers.

Jestah: I have two machines and both are so full right now, I don't think I would have room to partition them.

I have never really like dual booting anyway. I don't have a really good reason not to like them... I guess it's just a personal prejudice.

I am interested in reading about the experience the rest of you have doing this.

I do have almost twenty years of working with various UNIX systems and if I can be of any assistance, I will try. Although when it comes to in depth UNIX knowledge, I have found that others here seem to answer more quickly that I do.

Alright, I suppose we have all those who are willing to give this a shot. I hope everyone's already downloaded the manual in some form and hopefully printed it out. Maybe we can get this started this weekend?

I'm afraid I can't start this weekend, if we could wait until Monday I would be very grateful. The tickets for the LoTR: Two Towers premiere will be 'released' on Monday, so I'm going to spend most of this weekend in the queue for a ticket

But if you decide to start this weekend I'll just (try) to catch up with you during the week or something...

I just ordered a new computer so I'll have my old trusty here to turn over to a nix box and I'd love to follow along with you guys. Hopefully it will get here before you get too far along.

Now on to the LFS manual.

Thanks Jestah... ouch, 322 pages... Good thing I work in the CS lab and don't have to pay the $.05/page to print stuff out... That's like $16.00 for that book... Actually, that doesn't sound to unreasonable afterall... But still, free is better

So, everyone got an idea of what's going on so far?

Good news: We got in our 2 new Sun servers, and 12 new workstations (today was like Christmas in November ), and in the next week or two, we'll get in 10 new Windows machines to replace some of the older ones in the lab, and all the older ones (Windows and Solaris) go to the room where anyone can do anything with them. Woohooo, time to see what these things can really handle <evil grin>

Bad news: Well, not really "bad," but not great... It'll be at least a couple weeks before we get any of the older systems moved over to play with, so I won't have a machine to participate on for a little while...

Anyways, 10:00, time to go home finally...
