Someone just informed me about this - the stor.co.uk site has folded:

It rather spoils the yearbook fun.

Creating an Asylum alternative has been suggested before but nothing serious came of it - is now the time to move on this?

Would something like dragging and dropping elements in Flash which then sends the info to something like GD (which would build the image) be a possibility?

Well I think that making one with DHTML would be easier, just because macromedia tends to get extremely complicated. Although there are some talented individuals around here that I am sure, are capable of such things. I am willing to help in either case, graphics wise. I mean if I can make slimies I can make store troopers right?

Well, a few of us are looking into the possibilities of creating image info on a page and sending it to a back end image generator. The dhtml stuff shouldn't be too bad. I think we should have our own pixelpeople thingy!

I think what might be quite cool would be if we could make a pixel people utility available to everyone so they can play and adapt it. Having one place that did them was guaranteed to drive high rates of traffic (nicely viral) but that clearly didn't save their collective asses.

Oh OH! Can I do the clothing?

Michael: I'm glad you've gone from =( to =) in such a short space of time.

InSiDeR: Yes that would be great but you (and anyone else interested) will have to wait as we'll need to define dimensions, etc. before anything goes ahead and things are in the very earliest stages of planning (and it could quite easily go belly up - although before there never was the kind of incentive there is now).

The way I see things at this early stage is that we can have a DHTML front end (and presumably a Flash one if someone is so moved) which passes the data (like trousers_5 say) to a server-side image creation script (people can port it to different languages/modules - GD, netpbm, ImageMagick is they like). People are welcome to plat around and expand things and I assume they can quite easily prepare sets of clothing so people can mix and match to suit their needs (if you are a goth or a boy scout).

I'm proposing the Pixel People Project (not very original but......)

RS: Once the basics are worked out there is no reason that things couldn't be taken in that direction.

PS: What I wwas thinking of was a more generic name for the broader project but they sound good for the Asylum's implementation (how about Guru Generator for a GN version??).

RS: My initial thoughts are that we should go for something 2D to start with but the code would be adaptable for other base models if you wanted to do something like that in the future. 2D just seems simplest for the moment.

Basically there are some things that stortroopers did right and there are numerous things that can be improved on - for starters I'd like to see more focus on the face with something a bit like an identikit where you can also swap various features to make it more distinctive.

Dracusis: We're be looking at what we can do with that at the moment - it would be cool to do something like generate a basic figure and then give people the option of either downloading it (not having that feature was always a pain) or loading it into something like BugPaint (and lets not forget InI's pocket PS). Lots of interesting possibilities

RS: As long as we have a good template (basic outline of a figure - that kind of thing) we can add things like different hands for holding different stuff. I'd suggest arms by the side rather than on the hips.

InSiDeR: Relax RammStein is working on something and we'll need to kick the template around a bit until we are all happy so don't hold your breath. To answer your other question we will need the whole deal: hair, trousers, dresses, shoes, optional extras, etc. but wait until we let you know or you'd be wasting your time (although there is no reason you can't jot down any ideas you have for when things start rolling).

Are you all planning on using the same design style as Stor or do you plan to take it in a new asylum direction? I think we should come up with our own style of trooper/character for an new yearbook instead of borrowing someone elses art.

tikigod: we are open to suggestions. My main idea was to create something based around a flat 2D character which by its nature would be similarish to the stortrooper (unless we all have to redo out yearbook entries there has to be some similarity) but I was hoping that it would be possible for other people to use different styles of basic body types and graphics to customise the thing once it was up and running.

InSiDeR: Not yet this is going to require a mix of skills so for now it would be best kept here. It seems that most people are agreed it is a good idea and there are plenty offers of support coming in so I might start a thread specifically devoted to this (but then I suppose this thread has been anyway. I'll leave this for general discussion and once ideas start solidifying I'll fire up a new thread here devoted to the project.

A flat 2D object? No such thing . Since anything flat still has depth. .

Anyways, as soon as we get a template and we agree to use it's dimensions I will humbly create clothing.

I'm setting up the nekkid inmate as a .psd file for download by anyone and you can just add layers of different clothes and facial features and if your brave enough different hand gestures .. I'm not done yet well because it's Sunday Football and not to mention I'm taking care of someone whome just got back from the hospital .. but I should have the nekkid inmate done before this day is over

InSiDeR: Thanks for that clarification I hope everyone was able to follow my thinking there. What I was getting at was that it would be possible (with the same/similar code) in place to produce 3D pixel people as they are essential 2D graphics too (at least for the pruposes of the front end and back end workings).

hey .. I didn't say I was going to make whole new graphic .. that's the fun of this all .. make new jaw lines and or cone heads .. larger ears .. this is a template peeps to get things rolling .. my try concern really was making those hands and arms straight down .. that was a pain
