So I woke up this morning with (as usual) a busy day of translating ahead of me. I dropped out of bed, rolled the few feet across the floor to my computer and hit the power button. Everything began to whir up, except one of the whirs was a bit wobbly: more of a "waaaaaaa waaaaaaa waaaa waaaa wawawawawa" than a nice, clean whir. I thought, "great, a fan is going somewhere." Then a loud, long beep burst from the computer and I froze. My mind flashed back to the thread someone (can't remember who) posted here about beeps emanating from their computer. My life pretty much flashed before my eyes, and then I got a grip.

The first thing I thought was that the CPU fan was going and the CPU was overheating. But when I opened up the computer I found that the CPU fan was going fine... it was my graphics card that was waa-waaing. After some fiddling around I got the computer started. The card wasn't fried yet, but it was going fast. I figure it was that Neverwinter Nights phase I went through (OK, so I still play it occasionally)--everyone with a GeForce 2 had problems with that game.

So my wife and I went out, got a new card, and had a really nice lunch (rice, seaweed, and fish eggs cooked in a stone dish--it tastes a lot better than it sounds). And, as you can see, I am back in business. On the one hand I am very happy and relieved, and on the other hand I'm a tad pissed that half my day is gone and I haven't gotten any work done. Yep, that's how I deal with it--rather than actually starting to work I come to the Asylum and complain about it. It's therapeutic.

So, anyway, not that anyone really cares, but I just thought I'd share that. Like I said, it's therapeutic. Hope you all have a glitch-free day.

while we're sharing...

If my computer freezes... even if i push the power button.... it doesn't do anything....
I can sit there and push it until I'm blue in the face, and it just won't do a thing.
So I end up just unplugging it.
Then continued weirdness......
When I plug it back in, the computer immidiately boots by itself.

If I shut my computer down.... I can't get it to start back up unless i hold the power button for just the right amount of time.
If I hold it for about 4 seconds.... it powers back down...
If I hold it for about 2 seconds.... it powers back down...
It's gotta be just right, to boot.

And as you said... sharing is theraputic....
Hope you all have a glitch-free day. =)

Glad things worked out before any major explosions or anything, and that you`re feeling better.

Man, I HOPE that tastes better than it sounds...

<edit> Maybe you should just stop shutting it down, Michael..</edit>

Michael: I'm not sure if this is going to help in your situation, but I had a similar problem with my old computer; I had to hold in the button for a while for it to boot, and if I let go too soon it would power down again. Eventually I found out what the problem was: the power button on the case was not perfectly aligned with the button on the inside. Apparently I hadn't attached the case properly the last time I took it off. Now, you're probably not as retarded as I am, but I just thought I'd share that on the off chance that it might help.

db: Yes, trust me, it tastes a lot better than it sounds. I could probably have explained it a bit better: the "fish eggs" are caviar (sturgeon's eggs) and flying fish eggs, and the seaweed is what is called nori in Japanese and gim in Korean. There are also some other vegetables, like carrots and radish sprouts, and an egg yolk to top it off.

Hmm.... I wonder if that actually made it sound any tastier...

Well I'm glad that everything worked out for you. Hey, you got a new video card. What kind did you get?

About the food. That actually sounds good to me. There is a really good restaurant here that has a dish like that. They serve it in a clay pot with Mushrooms and all kinds of goodies.

I haven't been having any problems (knock on wood) with my computer. The only thing that bugs me is that Zone Alarm keeps blocking some "High" alerts because of the packets being sent to my computer. Very strange.

CPrompt: The new card is a Radeon 9000. It's a 64 MB card with dual monitor support and it supports "32 bit 3D graphics up to 2048 x1536." It's got a whole bunch of other nifty things--in fact, I'm wondering now if I didn't go a little crazy. I guess I'll have to get another monitor to justify the purchase....

I think I know what dish you're talking about... we call it yeongyang tolsotbap here (usually no fish eggs in it, though). The dish I had is simply called "albap" (which means "egg rice").

NoJive and Moth: No seasoning is required, trust me! Remember this is actual caviar that goes in to this, so it already has enough salt. As for the wasabi... well, I suppose a tiny bit might enhance the flavor, but they usually don't add it. I'm not even going to comment on the A-1....

Taxon, are you using a Dell? 'Cause I have the exact same problem. I think they are made that way so any unsuspecting knocks on the power button, don't turn it off. Yet you risk the chance of frying it by unplugging it, screwey Dell people.

The power button thing is a feature called "soft off". Basically, just pushing the power button should initiate the shutdown sequence in windows. Holding the power down for several seconds (usually 6 is the most, but it varies) will power down the computer.

Also, if you pull the plug, thereby removing power completely while the computer is on, the bios will automatically initiate POST and boot when power is restored.
