Preserved Topic: WinXP paging file...ARGGHHH!!! (Page 1 of 1)

Wondering if anyone knows how to force WinXP to use more physical memory instead of virtual memory. I have so much memory not being used, and Windows tells me that I have to increase my paging file. If I get rid of it all together, Windows hates it! WHY IS THE PAGING FILE EXISTENT!?

I just bought a stick of Corsair's new XMS series 512MB memory (400mHz) and I'm sure the paging file is just bogging me down...HELP!

I don't think you can, if you're really in Detroit, just wait a couple days, someone will come by the house and steal your computer

hmm dunno about XP but on my win 2K right click on My Computer and select properties then go to the "Advanced" tab and select the performance options.

Yeah, bit's advice should get you to where you can set the paging file for XP as well.

As for the paging file itself, it is very, very important to the way Windows runs. Even if you only have 12% usage for physical memory, Windows uses a lot of virtual memory for the simple fact that low memory priority items are heaped onto the virtual memory stack.

I'd recommend that you manually set your paging file to about double your RAM. So, set the maximum and minimum to about 1024MB.

Also, 512 megs of physical memory isn't all that much considering what a memory sponge windows XP is.
