sketch: It would depend on what software you used on the CD - I suspect most authoring packages would be flexible enough to allow you to password protect the CD but I'm not sure.

The FAQ has a list of other FAQs:

and there is a CD-R one:
www.cdrfaq.org

but I can't see anything on it there but have a good look.

Whenever I search I get a lot of hits on german pages?

Handy, isn't it?

But you can put an end to that in the Google preferences here:

As for the CD protection problem, I haven't seen that implemented in any of the more common burning applications like Nero or WinOnCD... the first thing that came to my mind was what Olsson already suggested, zipping the files with password protection. Though this surely isn't the ideal way...

Hi sketch,

Get DriveCrypt. It allows you to create virtual encrypted disks which can later be burned to and mounted from a CD. Needless to say, whoever you give such a disk to will have to own a registered copy of DriveCrypt and you'll have to use some secure means of getting the password to them such as a PGP encrypted email.
http://www.drivecrypt.com/

Is Drivecrypt secure? Well let me put it this way. If you use secure alphanumeric passwords (40+ characters) and fill all 4 password entry lines then unless someone tags & bags you with a key logger your data will be secure well past the heat death of the universe. Of course there are counter measures against key loggers.

I created a PGP drive that had password encryption then dumped that on to a cd. The only problem I found with doing that is that you have to take it off of the cd and put it on a hard drive in order to open it back up because it's read only on the cd and you have to remove the read only check in the properties in order to be able to log back into it...

As a side note on PGP, did you know that they couldn't export the program out of the US because of encryption laws? So they shipped the source code instead. It took two containers filled with tens of thousands of pages.

And with the 4 meg encryption available on the commercial release, it'd take years to crack a PGP encrypted file.

Thanks kuckus!
I had by mistake checked the german checkbox, only allowing google to show german hits!
