Thank the world that I'm a web guy and not a networking guy. Although right now I wish I had more of their skills. My old laptop uses a pc card : an ambicom amb8110. It worked great for a couple of years. Then one day (today) I rebooted it, it detected a new hardware and installed a texas instrument driver on to it! What?! I've tried changing drivers with its original driver and even reinstalled the card (removed it and its drivers and ran detect new hardware) and it still thinks its a texas instrument pc card. Is my laptop confused, or what.

Anyhow, if anybody knows the mystery behind this madness, I welcome any feedback....

Does it still work? If so, screw it, leave it alone.

It'd also be nice to know what OS you have, what kind of PC card it is. I'm guessing a ethernet network card.

And if all else fails and you still want the proper driver then go to the company that makes the driver get the newest one, cause i believe that's why windows (if that is what you are using) is giving the new driver priority over the older driver is because a more recent, compatible driver is present. (probably through microsoft's auto update) As for having it recognize the old one again, I have no clue. Probably some registry hack that I dare not delve into.

Just for future reference, hardware/software problems are much easier to diagnose when the following information is included:
Operating System
Main System Specs (CPU, memory, video card (or whichever card is giving trouble), etc.)
Anything you installed or upgraded or changed before the problem occurred
A complete explanation of the problem (as detailed as possible)

So, as far as your card is concerned, upgrading from 98 to ME might have had something to do with it. However, without knowing whether the problem started after you upgraded or sometime after you upgraded makes it a bit more difficult.

Also, check out the manufacturer's website for any information pertaining to that card, your laptop brand, and your operating system. Sometimes, certain bugs may bring up the need to download an earlier version of the drivers for that card. Once you're sure that you don't need to download a specific release version of the card drivers, then download the latest drivers for that card.

Also, when running detect new hardware, choose the option where it allows you to select the drivers to install instead of what it thinks are the best drivers. Install the original drivers to see if that works, then try it with the new drivers.

Also, are you having any problems with other PC cards? If so, you might have an internal hardware problem with your PCMCIA slots.

Please, let us know how it works out for you.

Well there's your problem right there. You upgraded from a fine OS (although SE is better) to what is potentially one of the least stable Windows incarnations around. Beleive me on this one Jive...I learnt it the hard way.

Ditto on what Skaarjj said. I just recently switched back to 98 from Me and if you've only recently made the switch to ME I'd recommend you switch back asap and avoid a *whole* shitload of trouble and frustration. Going through add/remove programs went remarkably well I thought considering it had been 9 months or so since the change over. Back up your address book. <g> Yup.... the sooner you blow ME outta da wadder du bedder. Looks like shit... smells like shit... must be shit!
