I also found out that sometimes hackers have something bigger in mind. Some don't really want anything "on" your computer, they just want your bandwidth. They can "take down" a server if they overload it with connections from other computers. So, if I was running a program on my computer (and didn't know it) that was continually connecting to a certain server somewhere, and there were countless millions that were running this same program, connecting to the same server, it would eventually crash the server. Now, I wouldn't know that it was connecting to this server, I would just probably notice that my computer was really slow while on the internet and blamed it on my modem or ISP.
