I finally got my DDR for my new machine. Even had some bucks for a new video card which has me totally stoked.

Okay,
new motherboard
new CPU
new memory
new harddrive
new video card
even a new case

Somehow I lost the book for the MB. I had it when I bought the memory, but now it's gone. Luckily, I happened to find it on the manufacturers site. Kudos for that as I've now got all of the little things in place (as far as I know, I do).

Time to power up for the first time and there is no power up at all - not even the fans.

So far, I have been over all of the connectors and they are all in place. You know, the power to the MB things and the switches and speaker and all that jazz. I even dinked around with the IDE and CMOS things.

Next I'm planning on pulling out my multi-tester and checking the power supply things for continuity and juice. Might even pull the MB to see if it's grounding out on the case because that was recommended in the manual.

If anybody has any ideas, I'm all ears because I don't know much about this kind of thing.

it does indeed sounds like your power supply has gone boom. Try checking the voltage switch at the back. Be sure it's set to the correct voltage for your region (110 for america I think). I had the problem once iwth a new power supply. Failed to check that and it happened to be set to the wrong setting...boom...one fried power supply.

The red switch is 115/230. I checked the switch on another power supply and it has the same numbers. I read that 220/230 won't do anything other than look dead. Also read that PS is soft switched by the MB, so I'm not sure how to use a multi-tester to check it. I'm pretty sure it's fine because there was no hum, ozone, or magic smoke.

I went over all of the connectors at least 3 times each. Double checked the plugs for harddrive lights and power switch and all that jazz. It all looks good.

I'll be in the office tomorrow night. One of the techs is seriously into hardware and we seem to get along fairly well. He's got a few machines at home and knows his way around. I'll run it past him and see what he has to say. If I'm lucky, he'll take the box. Then again, I'm sure you know how annoying non-folks can be to folks. You know, "Oh, you are good with computers? Care to fix mine?" type stuff. We'll see.

unless someone is a good friend of mine, when they dorp that 'so you're good with computers, care to fix mine?' thing on me out of the blue, I always get the urge to reply with 'sure....care to pay me for it?'

warjournal:
Try to disconnect some things (hd cd drives).
It could be the powersupply is protected for giving to much power ie when the connected devices are asking more power then the powersupply could give, the powersupply will not start at all. I had such a protected device once and i hated it.
Also ther could be an broken glass fuse inside the PS look for it (if there is one at all).

Wish you luck

a) the power suply should have a 'hard switch' on the back - sure that's on
b) turning it to 230Volts if you're in the us *will* fry it.
c) there's one line that should have 5 volts of power whenever the hard switch is on (standby) ( http://www.hardwarebook.net/connector/power/atxpower.html for details. It should be the purple one. The black ones are all mass, so you can measure against them
d) atx power supplies are soft switched by the mainboard. Sure you got the little cable coming from the front (there'll be a bunch of them... power switch, reset switch, speaker, leds, and so on) connected correctly? Try pressing the other switches ;-)

Most motherboards come with LEDs on the board that tell you whether or not they're getting power. If you have one of these LEDs and your power supply is connected and flipped on, check the LED. If it's off - then chances are your power supply is toast. However, it could also mean that your mobo is defunct as well.

I talked to the hardware guy at the office. He told me how to manually soft switch the power supply. When I do it, the power supply fan does turn on a little bit, real soft like. I tried this trick on another power supply and I got the same results.

Conclusion: motherboard is fried.

This sucks and I'm bummed.
It took me almost a year of scrapping and buying parts only to be stopped by a moment of shear idiocy.
I'm major bummed.

I still have a few more things to try, so there is the tiniest glimmer of hope.
