I have noticed several times that XP has some kind of little app that shows clock date hard drive metter and all that stuff on the desktop...I am not sure what its supposed to be or even if I have it...

does it comes with Home Edition?

Anyway, if you want to speed up your desktop (I know this is totally irrelevant to your question, but I can't resist doing all this on my friends' machines around town) go: Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Advanced. Then under Performance, click the Settings button. Choose Adjust for best performance. Then recheck the option "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop."

Then go Control Panel -> Display, and change your theme to Windows Classic.
Then the Appearance tab: click the Effects... button. Uncheck any boxes there. Click OK.
Then the Settings tab: click the Advanced button. Under Monitor, select your highest available refresh rate.

Then go download all the XP updates at WindowsUpdate.Microsoft.com.

Then if you want to speed up the desktop even more, get LiteStep from LiteStep.net or http://beyondconvention.net/ohussain/. Also get the Simplicity theme for LiteStep from the latter site.

I think I just realized what you're talking about.

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del, click Task Manager, click the Performance tab. (CPU / RAM)

Ruski I have XPHome, but apart from the usual clock in the start bar, I haven' got "a little app that shows clock date hard drive meter" It's been quite a while since I've done a complete fresh install, but I can't remember ever seeing one on the desktop as default.

Not really...unless you use a third party clock app. What you're looking at there isn't just a different skin on windows, it's a whole different shell. Different functions, different ways of arranging things. You can do things with WindowBlinds (or AstonShell, or any of the others) that you can't do with the standard windows shell.

If the skinning is anything like TGSoft Stylebuilder (which is the skinning app' I use) It can only skin whats there. The utilities you mention on the right side look to me to be a different prog' though I can't see one in the start bar that it might be.
There is something in Norton Utilities called "System Doctor" that has most the the information graphically displayed, so my guess is that it must be another prog' installed on that persons computer.

Ruski: That's a product of Stardock's SkinStudio, but I recommend LiteStep over any of Stardock's shell applications. You can do all that with LiteStep. LiteStep is also a complete shell. It doesn't use explorer.exe (the Windows shell) and it is so much faster. Creating your own skins takes a little time, but if you're familiar with XML, etc. it's no problem. There's also other skins like that seen at Pixstudio. The hdd meter seems rather pointless to me. Just open My Computer and take a look.

there are a couple of these types of programs for your taking. One of them is Sysmeter and another is Sysmetrix.

they are skinnable and they are pretty much just like the app that Petskull is refering to.
