Preserved Topic: what are you driving?

title says it all.. post pics, short description... whatever you want.

I'm driving a 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier LS Sedan. It's black, with a custom black/red interior. I've done a lot of work to the interior of the car, you can find pics here. It's a 2.4L inline 4-cylinder engine with about 63k miles on it.

Interior work list includes the following:
Clear H(eat) V(ent) A(ir) C(onditioning) Knobs
Two Red LEDs behind HVAC controls
Ten total LEDs in my vents - two in each main vent and one each in the two smaller vents
Two LEDs in each door handle
Two red underdash neons
Two red underseat neons (these are actually license plate neons, to stand up to the weight of people in the seats)
Red dome lights
Custom painted interior - black with red accents
Red/black seat covers (they aren't pink like in the pictures - they actually match the red of my interior).
Aluminum & red pedals
Re-upholstered door panels with black vinyl
Custom switch panel in centre console
Custom-mounted 6x9 rear speakers

Future mods for my interior include an LED in each of the coat hangers in the back, three LEDs in each rear speaker grille, and maybe a little more LEDs for accent lighting in the back. Work on the exterior & performance (see http://www.cardomain.com/id/redraptor for a list of exterior & performance mods) of the car is little, because a) it's expensive, and b) I'm saving up for my new car - a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII

so... what do you rely on to get around?

I'm driving a bicycle... a rather cheap mountain bike. I'm less than 3 miles from my office, the same distance to the grocery store, so it just doesn't seem to make sense to use motorized transportation. Occassionaly I'll take the bus, if conditions are too icy to bike. Studded tires would cost as much as the bike did.

I like the idea that I'm in some small way lessening my impact on our natural resources and reducing the volume of pollution pumped into our atmosphere each day. Plus being a bit mobility challenged due to a climbing accident a few years back, I use the bike when most folks would walk.

The exercise is another bonus, I've noticed that guys my age don't have much difficulty getting fat, and this adds some cardio to my routine.

Does all that after market gear cost alot?, I didnt realise that you can get stuff for inside a car, seen alot of outside mods going on... looks cool to me... (though I am too tight to spend the mulla) lol....

I have a gold 99 Pontiac Sunfire. I don't know, it just never seemed very important to me to have a snazzy vehicle. Econiomically speaking, I'd drive a Yugo if they still made them. I'd take a snapshot, but it's too freaking cold outside, and there's nothing to show off but dirt anyways.

So...very...red.

I'm on the norm bandwagon here. I ride my mountain bike everywhere, don't even have a learner's permit in fact, never learned to drive.

I have a 93 Chevy Caprice LS Sedan. Maroon exterior and Maroon leather interior. 12 disc CD changer (added mod...). Front and rear Boze speakers. Gets good mileage still.

It kind of looks like a U.S. State Trooper car, I love it when I come up on someones bumper and they pull over to the right, and I do not get cut off in traffic. hehehehehe. Gotta love it.

vp!! Long time no see Yeah, I'm going with an import as my next car. Seems to almost violate my Detroit-area upbringing... but it's just a temp. holdover until I can afford the insurance on a Dodge Viper Right now I'm looking for something fast that handles well (and won't rape my wallet), and the Evo fits that perfectly.

Aftermarket gear can get pretty damn expensive. Especially when you're working on the exterior of a car. Cheap, poorly fitting, fibreglass body kits for the Cavalier run from $325+, and they have to be freight-shipped, which costs about $180. Well fitting fibreglass kits, and urethane kits run anywhere from $800+. Then theres shipping on that too. So yeah, it gets expensive on the outside Rims can easily be $400 EACH!

However, it's an entirely different story on the interior of the car. I've done all of the work myself, so the only thing I'm paying for are supplies - neons, LEDs, wire... that kind of thing. Neon lighting is the most expensive as it runs about $20/bar. However, I can purchase something in the range of 40 LEDs for that same price. Paint is inexpensive - $3 a can.

I won't even begin talking about performance. That's expensive

FTR, I typically walk. Since I'm living on campus, all of my classes are about a 10 minute walk away. My cavi is reserved for trips home, trips to roller hockey practice, and trips around the nation

Ramasax: Pontiac Sunfire? Is it a 2.2 (sunfire se) or a 2.4 (sunfire gt)? I ask because the Pontiac Sunfire is built on the same platform as the Chevrolet Cavalier (GM's J-body).

Though I could never justify putting that much energy into a vehicle that has such a steep depreciation factor, seems pretty cool to look at. Nice job!

I am driving a 1977 Ford Bronco while I finish restoring/building my 1970 Bronco. My project is just waiting for me to funnel more of my disposable income into it. When its all said and done I am hoping to get right around 500hp out of the 418w Fi block. One of the many things I will add is propane injection so I have an alternate fuel source. When the 70' is done I start in on the 77'. I sold all my other project cars and have decided that I will never buy a new vehicle again...

I am currently WATCHING my ride sit in the garage due to a dead transmission. It's a 97 Geo Metro Lsi 4 cylinder with 150K miles. Nothing special... it gets me there.

What i've been driving recently is a 92 full size Chevy Silverado. It also gets me there, just with a lighter wallet.

I'm sure to some, this may be a stupid question.....

but....

why the hell would you want LED or neon all over the inside of your car???

I put far too many miles on my car to justify doing that to it.... maybe whenever I get around to moving closer to my job.... but I have to ask.....

Why a Cavelier? With the money you spent in mods, I am sure you could of afforded a real car! Your like every other Talon, Civic, Celica that I leave behind in my Thunderbird.

Each LED bulb takes .01sec off of your 1/4 mile time, neon takes even more, throw on some clear corners and some gaudy exterior paint and you have....say it with me...A TEN SECOND CAR!!!

I can appreciate that interior glow being red however, wont kill your night vision. Makes it easier to roll ciggies in your lap at stoplights.

DL - it's like moaiz said - it's an individuality thing. The lights are switched, so if they get annoying as I'm driving I can just turn them off.

Nemesis - As I've mentioned, it's been pretty inexpensive for me so far, and I'm just about done. I'm saving up for something that'll actually go fast - the Evo VIII, which I'm sure would spank that Thunderbird Once I get it, I won't be doing much modification to it, especially appearance-wise. I'll be going all out for suspension and performance mods once my warrantee expires though.

1996 Honda Accord v6 - with about 130,000miles but never been into the shop besides oil changes and tune-ups. Best car I ever had.

A blueberry colored 95' dodge intreped with 220,000miles, leaky transmission, and no working radio. I need a new car soon but then never cared much for cars and only drive when I realy have to, besides Minnesota drivers are mostly nuts to scary to drive at least on the highway.

But I got luckly with my new job, I can ride my bike, bus or walk on most days. I live not far from Lake Calhoun and the trails are wonderful.

CPrompt, those shots are a bit misleading. I took those a few years ago on a trip through Zion National Park. It was very cold there but I don't live in a climate like that normally.

C:\ The flavour of my mountain bike is an "Al Carter" Saratoga2, with Shimano gears (21).
And I've just realised that I too have LED's on it.
Well actually the LED's are on my rucksack, so they flash (3 different settings) at a good height for all those "loonie" drivers out there to see me more clearly on these dark winter nights.
For the record I haven't noticed any drop in performance when I am using the lights

A mint green 1990 Mitsubishi Magna Executive wagon with terrible stereo and worse economy. When I'm not driving that, I drive a 2003 silvermint Ford Falcon. Neither actually belong to me, but with parents like these, who needs emenies?

right now i'm driving the big van through the sand and snow that is winter. Can hardly wait to get my baby back on the road though.

The van is an '85 Dodge Ram custom Coachman with a 318ci and complete conversion interior. Four captains chairs that spin around, a card table, a rear bench that folds into a bed, a beer cooler, cruise control, electric windows and locks, and everything else a young college student could need

The Mini - my baby - is a 1980 Leyland Mini 1000 with newly built engine, custom paint color with racing stripes, 10x5 inch alloy wheels running 165/70/10 Yoko GX501's. Always working on improving it, but its already a blast to drive and a really nice car.

1998 Jeep Cheerokee with full plating on the undercarriage. I bought after I screwed up the undercarriage of my cheap jeep Wrangler while on assignment in the Wyoming Rockies. Why not buy a better Wrangler? Because the winds in western Wyoming had a nasty habit of taking the roof off the car...while it's -7 degrees F outside and the next town is 50 miles away. The funny part is I got a job in Kansas 4 months later.

We're trying to pay down the credit cards to so I can buy either Tahoe, Navigator or Escalade next year. And then the modding will begin(stereo, speakerbox, rims, possibly even DVD).

DB - yep, I'm jealous. It's good to hear you drive a real Camaro though, not one of those V6's that people (mostly teenagers) think are fast... and btw, nice gas mileage.

It's all good though, because my plans for this car have changed somewhat... can you say boost? I've been learning how to use fibreglass too so hopefully I can craft my own body kit/hood/etc.
