So far I've been able to hack other people's javascripts up and make them do what I want them to do, however if a prospective employer sat me down with a blank sheet of paper and a pen and told me to write a javascript that did something specific I couldn't do it.<P>Can anyone recommend a book(s) that teaches you how to write javascript from scratch and delves into theory and concepts. I've found some that have sample scripts and others are definitive but I can't find a book that explains how to write javascript from scratch.<P>

The one single book that I found to be most helpful was The JavaScript Bible by Danny Goodman. I tried to use some of the teach yourself JavaScript websites, and JavaScript for Dummies, and various other books. But The Bible simply worked the best for me. Also what helped was I went offline to use the book. That way I wasn't getting email, and I wasn't tempted to go look at websites that were used as examples. It kept me way more focused.
If you are planning on buying a book online try not to use Amazon. Use a competitor for now. <P>-I'm not a complete idiot,

Oooh, best JavaScript book in the world: "JavaScript: the definitive guide". Look at www.oreilly.com (or is it org? and did i spell oreilly right? I'll check later...) and try to find it. I learned everything I know about it from that book; it skips no details.<P>Spell "slime" differently, and you get "smile"! Not that anyone really cares...
