I was wondering about the use of frames. I see a lot of great sites, such as this one, not using frames. Is there a reason for that? I see frames as a great was to get around without menues being re-loaded with each page. So is there a reason why a vast majority of web pages don't have frames?? What are your opinions on that.
ps. I'm fairly new to web page design.
------------------ |

Well, you've got that right, frames are primarily used to eliminate the reloading of menus and such, or at least they're supposed to be. I use frames on my first page, did you notice? I have my center frame, which is a fixed width, and then two variable frame sides set so the middle piece is centered. Here I use it because I wanted a fixed upper left corner in that middle frame.
Drawbacks with frames? Well, every time you place a frame, you're carving out a hunk that doesn't scroll with the rest, making viewing on smaller screens a pain. Frames that are used *just* for placement, like on my front page, can be annoying if you have to keep reloading them.
Netscape is stupid about frames, so you will run into problems with frame sizing, enexpected results. Places where I like frames? I use them on my background archive, I think they make sense there. also, the alice pages have frames, ditto. Just use them smart, and FOR A REASON, and all will be well. Good luck to you!
Your pal, -doc-.
|

I generally find frames rather annoying.....
I don't know what it is, but a lot of places that I see frames used are fool who set them with PERCENTAGE of a window, rather than exact pixel size.
I have, however, seen many very god uses of frames. I guess it depends mostly on the res of the visitor's screen (I always run 800 600)
--TheCommando-- |
