Alright, I know how to make different layers and how to show/hide them. For my new layout, which is comming along pretty good I want to know if its possible to make a layer fade in and out, sorta like what can be done in flash. Also, is this compatable with NN? I finished up making a really neat layout and i wanted to use layers to switch inbetween content but I want it to fade in ...

Hmmm... good question.

I *think* (but don't take this as gospel), that IE 5 caters for this in some way. I know you can use different methods to fade in and out when when the user first enters the page, and also on leaving a page, but I'm not quite sure if this has been extended to layers.

I know for certain that it isn't catered for in level 4 browsers. So if you want to make something that works on those, you'll have to use Photoshop again, and swap layers with diferent levels of trancparency.

Anyone know what NS6 has in sotore along these lines? And further, does anyone know how Flash does it? (I've never used flash, so don't really know much about it!)

Okie, any thoughts on how i can actually do this though? Doing it in Flash shouldnt be too hard but I would prefer not to do it using that.

There is an IE alpha filter which I believe is what would perform this trick. I haven't used it and I can't find my CSS book so I am not sure the usage.

Yeah, IE supports partial transparency; I've played around with it once, but I forget how it's done. The info is *somewhere* on Microsoft's page, I forget exactly where, sorry! I might be able to remember how to make something partially transparent, but I can't remember how to animate the transparency.

Regardless, the technique only works in IE 5.0 and up, possibly also IE 4.0. It certainly doesn't work in NN; nor, if it were ever to be implemented in NN, would it likely be done the same way.

For now, try this...

STYLE="filter:alpha(opacity=50);"

One thing, I doubt this is the case but if the layer is say, just text and is coming in over a block of color (one color or slight graidents) there is a way to fade this sort of thing in using a color fade. Basically you write a script that changes the font from the background color into the regular color hitting a few gradients in between.

I doubt this is what you are looking for but it is a cool trick.

The background for a layer defaults to transparent. Just don't set a background color or image.
