i find that when i have various actions going on inside a popup window such as button sounds, swaps of large preloaded imges, etc, these actions often times are misfired, meaning that i'll click on a button and sometimes it will sound, sometimes it will not, and especially with my large preloaded gif swaps, they often times will not appear at all when a button is clicked (they won't even show a box with a red 'x' to indicate that there should be an image there- only a blank white space appears), and only upon clicking multiples times on the button or right-clicking 'show picture', will they finally appear even though they have been preloaded. however, when the same page is tested online in its own full screen browser window rather than a popup on top of another window, everything works fine.

can someone tell me why this is happening, and what i can do to remedy it? could it be perhaps a function of the fact that i have a slow processor and its a matter of having to share resources (or maybe also compounded by the fact that my host connection is slow)? can i add script to somehow improve performance?

Your page is very CPU-intense and that's why it doesn't work as it should. My only suggestion is to make it simpler, there's nothing else that can be done to improve performance. For example, you have a Flash intro, which gets replaced with HTML page after it's finished, and that is really useless. You have to decide if you want to have Flash or HTML page (but not both).
