You need to use some server-side language in order to create web site counter (it can't be done with DHTML/JavaScript, since JS is client-side language).

Take a look at some of these already made counter server-side scripts (and the only thing that you need to do is to install script that you choosed, oh btw your web server must have support for CGI or PHP): http://www.hotscripts.com/Perl/Scripts_and_Programs/Counters/ & http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Counters/

And stay away from hosted counters. They are not accurate. Server side statistics software is still the best.

when your host is like geocities or some other free ones, 3rd party visitor counters may be the only ones you can depend on. I use www.thecounter.com. It's free (used to), i just recieved an email from them that states they are making their users pay for the service, I dont know how it's going to work.

there are free counters that advertise on your page, in exchange of counting for you, well, don't worry, those are ALWAYS hackable with javascript and dhtml to kick them away, (heheh, geocities's banner was too easy to break)

And those are RARELY accurate.

thanx
I'll take a look at those but I'm not sure if my server allows ME to use MY CGI&PHP
will let u know how it's going

BY THE WAY!!!
Does anyone know if I can make the webpage load entirely before it is displayed on the screen?
so, I want it to load all the pics before it shows up on the screen
is that possible?

pugzly is right, but better tahn nothing.

if you have access to logs, you can write/find shell scripts or perl scripts to interpret the log files and count for you, that should be the most accurate way.

Well, here's my .03:

Server logs are the best. They are always accurate.
Hosted counters suck - they can always be fooled. And advertisers WONT use numbers from hosted counters.
Visible counters suck - no one looks at them except the webmaster.

www.nedstat.com
I just found it, and seem pretty good.

if you are new to webmaster, concentrate on what you are doing or aiming to do now, and use 3rd party counters.

NedStat has been around for quite some time... Anyway, there's also a similar service here: http://www.extreme-dm.com/
