I remember you posted something about an object that can hold variables between the browser window or so?

was that the navigator.MyVarGoesHere object ?

It doesn't even work with IE4+, because IE5.5 doesn't get it either. As far as I know, however, you can always store info inside of a frameset, so if there IS something important, you could pull some kind of frameset-trick(rows="100%,*" or something like that) in order to get things working. Hmz, come to think of it, I doubt whether xhtml would accept such an approach...
