Ok here is the scenario:

Our company wants a shopping cart. Lets say 500 items, might be less, might be more,...
Looking at what we have now the only realistical solution would be ASP and Access on a NT box.

I am the only person in the company that have some knowledge of ASP programming and such but I have never done a Shopping Cart and I don't see this as an easy task.

Tell me, how realistic is it for one person to start working on a shopping cart?
Is that possible at all? When somebody mentions Shopping Cart I see it as job for at least 4-5 people (talking only about technical stuff). And there are many things that you have to think about, like security, hardware,...

Are there any good Shopping Carts ready to use out there? Do you have any experience with them?

Here's the thing are you talking about just a cart? the cart just keeps track of what the user wants to buy, it doesn't handle the inventory, credit card transactions etc. It in itself is fairly basic mostly it just takes a bit of session management. I've never done it in ASP but it should be fairly straight forward.

If you want the whole kit and kaboodle then you are looking at more work though there is undoubtedly a freeware solution.

Yes I was talking more about the whole process not just the cart.
But if you say that the cart on its own is not so hard to do, I guess I could start with that and tell them that the CC transactions and the security is not my job

Can anybody tell me if Access database would be enough?
I don't think that they would spend money for the MS SQL server yet.

And, as I understand freeware solutions, they all require some kind of DB on your end, right?
