About web sites I always design for the 800 x 600 pixel areas, I always make them 800 Pixels wide, which fits perfect in a maximized 800 X 600 browser. As for my current sig... I have always been around guys that use the basic signature size of 500 x 90 pixel size. And this pic doesnt take long to load at all, I have the crap connection of 26000. And it loads instantly. Okay I like the size comments but could I get a few comments on the art itself? I kinda thought that the background hole thingy draws your eyes over my name. As for negative space, does this peace really need it? Please reply thanks.
 |

OK, let's all cool off here, eh? TFX17, most of the advices here actually are pretty good. I design site that will work at 800x600, but even so, I don't design them 800 pixels wide! Try not to forget the scrollbars and borders around the browser. I actually design the majority of my sites at 640 pixels wide nowadays, it makes me more compfortable, and most of the folks I know who use the web on a daily basis also use their computers for other things too, so a window smaller than 800x600 is by far the most common. Take it for what it's worth, but it's good advice, and well meant.
I actually like the look of the banner graphic, the feel of it is kinda cool. For use on this forum, the blue color on a somewhat big banner can be kinda jarring, especially when you end up having to pipe up so often defending it! My graphic.sig is 372x31, I designed it to match with the look here, and I'm thinking of making it even smaller and more muted, it can get kinda heavy when I have to post a lot. Speed for you won't be an issue, you probably have that sig image in your cache about a dozen places, not an issue here.
Howzabout we make a deal? I'm going to set myself a limit of 400 pixels wide, and only 28 pixels tall, matched against this background. That'll be my new sig file, and let's see if you can do the same. I warn you, mine is going to use the background color, I'm shooting for low-key here, and I bet it'll earn more positive responses.
Here's another beef! Why hasn't anyone but me, Slime, and now TF X17 used the graphical sig function? Don't you guys ever do any graphics? <g> I'll expect some action from you guys!
|

Strange, the darn thing is set to allow ubb image code, but the text says it ain't, and it does allow it! Hey, papa! (And anyone else who's going to try and merge into the background!) On my sig, the first time, it merged badly, what was wrong? OK, maybe the ALTERNATING COLORS OF THE CELLS, hmm? Dammit. I ended up creating my image with a merge of those two colors, (light one first layer, dark one second layer, set that layer to 50%), and then used the transparency option. It seemed to work OK.
|

Ah, yes, you always have to average the alternating colors!
I think it's important that signatures are simple and subtle, too... I took a risk with animating mine (animation is almost always distracting) but I think it turned out OK, since it changes so little.
A suggestion for all - try to merge your signatures with the background color around them; they look more natural that way. Try to avoid letting the edges of the image show.
 |

I prefer the second one, the gladiator one, because it's much more subtle and seems to fit in this reddish environment much better than the blue one does. (You may want to try more faded shades of blue or something on the first.) Size, however, is an issue =) so before you use them, use a combination of resizing and cropping to reduce the size without losing the important parts of the image. You're pretty good for the first week or so of using the program for web graphics.
 |

OK, not too bad, but now you need a bit more contrast under that type. Here's what I'll recommend. First, do a black dropshadow under it, but don't offset it, just blur it maybe 2 pixels with gaussian blur. Put a mask on it, and fade it so it dissapears to the left, we only need it under the flare. Then do a glow under the whole thing, say enlarge the selection one pixel, fill with yellow, blur by two, make a new layer over it, select the type shape, fill with pink, blur by 1. You'll get a nice fiery glow. merge those two layers, add a mask, and fade it so it dissapears to the right. You'll end up with the type clear and easy to read, a glow under it to the left, and a shadow under the flare to the right. Play with it, I think a combination of those two effects should add some impact.
|

You need to use UBB code not HTML in the sig.
|

Just wanted to get in on the action to a small extent. Only problem I ran into was keeping the image small, in height. The use of lens flare forced me to increase the height. I was hoping to keep the height around 35, but was unsure as to how I should have made the top and bottom meld to the background with the highly contrasting colors of the lens flare being the image border.

[This message has been edited by WarMage (edited 30-05-2000).] |

Maybe you should try actually sqeezing the lens flare so that it's more of an eliptical shape, see if that looks good, and it will decrease the size. |

Or, you could make the picture really big, so the lens flare and text are almost the same size, then shrink the immage down to the size you wanted.
- Dan - |
