My biggest advice: make 'em smaller.
Also, narrow your focus; emphasize one aspect or area. Play more on subtle effects, with some defining contrast (negative space is OK!).
This has been another episode of "My 2 Cents" with your host, DL-44

We say smaller for various reasons.
For the sig file, smaller is better, as it does not distract from other peoples postings, and it does not take as long to download. Think about it, if a thread gets to be long, and we are all waiting for huge sigs to download, this board will become deserted. We've been spoiled by instant gratification.
The reason we say smaller for web sites is very simple. When you design, you want to design for the lowest common denominator. If you only design for 1024x768 you are alienating close to 90% of the web audience. (It's actually harder to design for 1024x768 than it is to design for 800x600 IMHO.) You are better off serving the majority of the web audience unless you know, without a doubt, that your users will be using a set size. To do otherwise, only hurts yourself and your site.
I myself run a desktop of 1024x768, but I run my browsers at 800wide. Most days if I come to a site that says "best viewed at 1024x768" I leave. I feel that it is lazy design, you can design a site for 800, that stretches to 1024, and still looks good. If you look around you will see what I mean.
Cuius testiculos habes, habeas cardia et cerebellum.

Im with F1 on that logic...myself i run 800x.........only because that is the standerd now and i like the feel of that size........ok so im loosing my young eyes..over 40 ya know...hehehehe.............i compensate for pallet space with extra video cards and monitiors....all my computers run dual monitors..............and yes negative space is good and one focal point to draw your eyes is rule the rest is great back-grnd..........just a thought...DocCyber

Yes, I also run 1024x768, but never ever have my browser maximized -- it's just not appealing to do so.
And, yes, pretty much what F1 said -- it's just bad design to aim for such a large screen setting, and for a signature it's almost absurdly large: it's as big as an ad banner!
This has been another episode of "My 2 Cents" with your host, DL-44

About web sites I always design for the 800 x 600 pixel areas, I always make them 800 Pixels wide, which fits perfect in a maximized 800 X 600 browser. As for my current sig... I have always been around guys that use the basic signature size of 500 x 90 pixel size. And this pic doesnt take long to load at all, I have the crap connection of 26000. And it loads instantly. Okay I like the size comments but could I get a few comments on the art itself? I kinda thought that the background hole thingy draws your eyes over my name. As for negative space, does this peace really need it? Please reply thanks.

OK, let's all cool off here, eh? TFX17, most of the advices here actually are pretty good. I design site that will work at 800x600, but even so, I don't design them 800 pixels wide! Try not to forget the scrollbars and borders around the browser. I actually design the majority of my sites at 640 pixels wide nowadays, it makes me more compfortable, and most of the folks I know who use the web on a daily basis also use their computers for other things too, so a window smaller than 800x600 is by far the most common. Take it for what it's worth, but it's good advice, and well meant.
I actually like the look of the banner graphic, the feel of it is kinda cool. For use on this forum, the blue color on a somewhat big banner can be kinda jarring, especially when you end up having to pipe up so often defending it! My graphic.sig is 372x31, I designed it to match with the look here, and I'm thinking of making it even smaller and more muted, it can get kinda heavy when I have to post a lot. Speed for you won't be an issue, you probably have that sig image in your cache about a dozen places, not an issue here.
Howzabout we make a deal? I'm going to set myself a limit of 400 pixels wide, and only 28 pixels tall, matched against this background. That'll be my new sig file, and let's see if you can do the same. I warn you, mine is going to use the background color, I'm shooting for low-key here, and I bet it'll earn more positive responses.
Here's another beef! Why hasn't anyone but me, Slime, and now TF X17 used the graphical sig function? Don't you guys ever do any graphics? <g> I'll expect some action from you guys!

Hey, papa! (And anyone else who's going to try and merge into the background!) On my sig, the first time, it merged badly, what was wrong? OK, maybe the ALTERNATING COLORS OF THE CELLS, hmm? Dammit. I ended up creating my image with a merge of those two colors, (light one first layer, dark one second layer, set that layer to 50%), and then used the transparency option. It seemed to work OK.

Ah, yes, you always have to average the alternating colors!
I think it's important that signatures are simple and subtle, too... I took a risk with animating mine (animation is almost always distracting) but I think it turned out OK, since it changes so little.
A suggestion for all - try to merge your signatures with the background color around them; they look more natural that way.
