Hi all,
I want to know how it is possible to cut graphics in pieces so it can be used on the net with a pre-loading script. Maybe it is possible in Photoshop to save the layers to seperate files which would be very handy if you are making interfaces etc. Or it isn't possible in Photoshop but in an other (freeware) program.
Thanks for your advice.
------------------ |

The easiset way to cut up your graphics is to use your "guides" and then cut out your peices with the marquee tool. If you want detailed instructions, just let me know and I'll post the whole routine.
[This message has been edited by DL-44 (edited 23-03-2000).] |

Looks like DL-44 has got you covered...I use imageready (comes with PS 5.5) and it does it seemlessly as well.
You can also go to www.designsbymark.com for that tutorial.
|

Exactly what Phil said. You don't want to take the layers seperately! The "copy merged" will take everything within the selected area from all layers. Sometimes your guides can get pretty numerous, depending on how well things line up on your interface. Just remember that you don't want to nmake too many peices - large uninvolved sections should be left as one piece, just cut out things that might need to change or move or be used as links(like for mouseover effects, or animated sections).
------------------ |

Here's something I do when cutting images. Let's say for instance my web page bkgd is white. If my image has large areas of white I try to make my cuts so that I do not have to use the white cut pieces of the image and just use the white bkgd to fill the white areas. This will make the load time somewhat shorter.
Example: the big round banner graphic on this page...
------------------ |

Argh, stupid browser crashed right at the end of a longish post, fooey. Here's the abbreviated version...
First off, think of what you do when you copy merged and create new, paste and flatten. It's perfect for an action, and that's my most used action in the bunch! Select along your guidelines, press "f4", and away you go! Try it out, you'll never find a more perfect candidate for an action.
I'll save my actions and post them for you. One moment please...
-doc- |

OK, here ya go! Try not to be too dissapointed, there's only 6 of them, and 3 are quick keys to basic functions that aren't there. Enjoy!
actions.zip
Your pal, -doc- |

The easiest way I've ever seen is with a program called DICER. It lets you drag guide lines onto the picture, then slices and dices, and even creates an HTML page with a table setup for the image. Really simple. You used to be able to get it from http://www.winfiles.com, but I can't find it there any more. If anyone wants it, let me know. It's small, and runs without being "installed".
Pat Richard |

Yeah, I'd be interested in giving it a try. I don't have image ready, and although I generally prefer doing things manually, it'd be cool to have something to do it for me if I were in a rush. |

I'm not usually one to jump on the bandwagon, but this pgm. sounds like something that might come in handy this semester. I'm still awestruck at the unbelievable power of all this-you guys will be able to help when my teachers can't! I'm the oldest student in my class(could be their mother) and can always use an edge. |

Greets!
I did a quick search, and it appears that .039 is the latest version. I found an FTP site at http://rainbow.kapaams.k12.hi.us/files/web/Image_Dicer/ that has it. Let me know if anyone can't get it, and I'll toss it on my server.
Pat Richard |
