... you see, I'm some 16-year-old Canadian punk who's arrogant enough to think he actually has something to contribute, so I've put together a sort of tutorial about an effect I find myself using a lot (don't ask me why), and I've got a question: I have no idea how to go about this, so is there anyone with more experience willing to critique it for me? Specifically, can someone tell if I acutally have anything worthwhile to contribute, and, assuming I do, am I giving any bad advice, bass-ackwards methods, unclear and ambiguous directions, etc?
Anyway, I think I've rambled long enough, the address is "http://www.dlcwest.com/~proko/tut2.shtml". Feel free to have this deleted if it's inappropriate or a total waste of time.
The Penguin King

Hey, don't worry if you feel you don't have much experience! I'm 16 too... we all started out with no experience whatsoever; its just a matter of time. Lots of people come in here thinking they're inadequate; the purpose of the forum is just to have fun, i'm sure!
And the tutorial looks pretty good. Sorry I don't have photoshop, so I can't give you a better opinion. Feel free to post again!
----------

Yeah, but I'm more clueless than most. I only started learning Photoshop less than five weeks ago (heck, I only found out what, precisely, Photoshop *was* less than five weeks ago, I thought it was one of them photo-enhancing apps like you use to remove redeye and airbrush zits). That in mind, I'm understandably certain that I'm clueless.
The Penguin King

Hey, I wouldn't sweat it too much, I'm pretty sure you're not the only Canadian here! Let's look at the tute...
Whoa! That's pretty good! I'd want to add some slight edge effect where the land meets the water, I'd have to step through the whole thing to decide where best to include the extra steps. There's a tute floating around for creating a rotating 3D globe off of a file like you have there, I've used the effect once or twice myslef, maybe Malin will remember where it might be? Anyone else, pipe right in, cool?
You're OK for a canadian, don't let that 16 year old part worry you none either, these things have a way of taking care of themselves! Thnaks for the tute, keep it up, you're doing good.

The tut' you're looking for is on ScreamDesign.com as far as i can remember, but it is in the members area which i have no access to. i've been trying to duplicate the effect myself and got quite nice results, and this tut' helps me too. Thnx PK, you're doing great, keep it up.
Never Pet a Burning Dog

Yeah, don't be so hard on your self you wanker. Your tute is pretty cool -- I like the end result (the animated globe) especially. It's a nice walk through the process, with good insight into using layers and channels. Like Doc said, some edge definition would help a little, but that's about all it's lacking.
Nice work Penguin King.
What care I how time advances? I am drinking Ale today. -- Edgar Allen Poe
