Here is a quick tip on using Photoshop or any software program.....dont learn the program from a users stand point learn it from the creators of the softwares standpoint........first figure out why they created the software then try to figure out how they accomplished making it work.....Photoshop is an image manipulator using color.............howd they do that..........as an artist you have certain things you have to do......well they created a tool for you to do it....go find it........this approach has given me insight into the software that would take months if i just pushed buttons and stumbled on things..............................just a thought...............Cyber Custom Paints...
[This message has been edited by DocCyber (edited 24-05-2000).]
[This message has been edited by DocCyber (edited 24-05-2000).]

Dan....what your seeing is 30 yrs of airbrush skills........what photoshop is great at doing is allowing you to layer your steps then tweek individual layers.......so if you duplicate a layer then make one layer darker and the other one more transparent you can achieve a great depth illusion..but first you have to know how to airbrush suttle color changes or what we call color fades on to each layer so 3-4 layers actually make up one layer effect....what i do with photoshop is actually just an extension of my real time airbrush in my custom paint shop.........its a great tool...........another trick is allways paint on at least an 800 pixel pallet then shrink it down........it shrinks your work and disguises small errors.....good luck.....Cyber Studios

Oh, I do love it, both your work and what you're saying, Doc. One of the first things I usually explain to folks starting out is to LOOK, see what's around you! You can't create an illusion unless you know what you've seen in the past, people may not understand what's what in an intellectual sense, but they know if it "feels" real. I remember in one design class, long ago, we were working with markers, and we had to draw a black car. We weren't allowed to use a black marker! We had to go out on a field trip and find some shiny black cars, there's almost no black on 'em, unless it's somewhere in the reflections. I taught an extension class once, and I spent a week on drawing chrome. Before I'd let anybody start, I made them all go find some chrome to bring into class. (I brought along a couple dozen pieces of my own, just in case. :-) The thing is, I *have* this kind of stuff, and before I start work, I *look* at it, what am I trying to achieve here? Another good example I used was rose petals. What color is a rose petal? Heck, it's about 50 colors, usually, not pink, not red, all sorts of weird colors you never suspected. My favorite thing to do with those was to have people just stare at them, look at the edges of the petal. Is the highlighted edge light colored? Maybe, but only up until the last bit of the edge, then it gets dark again where it curves down. Grass was another favourite, I'd take people outside, make 'em get down on their hands and kness and *look*. Grass ain't green, even though that's the impression you get. Look around you, the world is a busy place, and if we're going to display our version of it to folks, we gotta know what we're doing, AS ARTISTS. Look!

i was struggling with rust, until I studied half a car door in the backlane, ripped off a chunk and sat it next to my puter, saw that it was made up of lots of little layers, sort of decaying and splitting apart, then it all made sense , perfect for photoshop, layer upon layer upon layer, i came up with this. didn't make sense until I actually studied it

I really dig what you "Doc's" are saying here. In fact I've learned more about photoshop in the last few months "opening" my mind than in all the years prior!
PS has limitless possibilities, and is only limited by the user's imagination. We can ALL arrive at the same result, each having travelled on a different path....that's way cool to me.
Kind of like The Matrix huh? Free your mind....
The Truth Is Out There
My personal preference is to avoid hurtling my body into anything rawhide

Ahh, the joys of learning. One day I'll have skills... one day
I haven't really used the air brush tool much. Only to get depths effects. (To make it high, white on top, to make it low, black on top) I think it will take me a lot more practice before Im good though, and WAY more imagination.
..one day.
- Dan -
