Hey all! If you've got the time, please read my story and help me if you can =)

I was so stoked last week because we finally bought a scanner - and it came with Photoshop!!! Thing is, it turns out I'm stuck with Photoshop Limited Edition 4.0, which *doesn't have* the Render subheading. Is there a different way that I can make the realistic flame/lighting effect? Or, better yet, is there any way I can add the necessary bits that I'm missing (or whatever they're called) onto my program *without* spending any more money? A website that offers them for free, for example.

Anyone who has the time and knowledge, pleez respond! I'm so disappointed that I can't make spiffy flames; I was really looking forward to learning how to make them. Thanks!

Peace,
AP.

i had to use photoshop-le a few times on a friend's computer and it just doesn't get the job done in my opinion. but there's no simple upgrade that'll change photoshop-le into the full version...

so it looks like you're going to have to find photoshop 5.5 on a warez site or something... i hope the people here don't hate me for saying that. of course, i can't recommend a warez site, sorry.

You can recreate some of what the lighting effects filter does by using a transparency mask. If you want to make some 3D shape without using the lighting effect, just try something like this:

Take the shape and select its transparency. Edge the selection right and down a couple pixels and feather it with a setting of 1 or 2. Select the contrast/brightness and crank the brightness down all the way. Then edge the selection back up and left twice as many pixels as you edged it down and right and crank the brightness all the way up.

Tadah! An easy 3D effect without needing the lighting effects. You can add a slight metallic look by playing with the curves.

That's just a simple example.. you may try tweaking and adjusting different things of what I suggested to make it look the way you want of course. As for clouds and lens flare, well, I can't help you there.

By the way... I'm not exactly sure how you intended to make flames using the render filters... I've always made them using the wind and ripple filters along with a black body color table.
