Somebody on another forum criticized my signature as having nothing to do with my name... so I spent a little time tonight making one more appropriate to my name. Let me know what you think. Please note : The image looked ten times better when I was working on it at 900 x 150... knocking it down to my standard 300 x 50 size lost quite a bit of detail.

I changed my mind... Here's the image at the size I worked on it. Enjoy.

Thats C00L man! Reminds me of Id games, ie Doom or Quake. Great job!
Did you create the skin-tissue form manually? or created a background image and masked it? i'd like to know.

Thanks for the support guys.

I made the skin texture by hand. There was a lot of tweaking to it. I started out in a channel, made a rectangular box that I filled with a diamond gradiant from white edges to a grey middle. I selected the box, then contracted the selection a lot, feathered it a bit and selected the inverse. Then I messed with the distort filters... wave, glass, etc to get the shredded edge look.

I made a new layer and filled it with a semi skin-ish color and used lighting effects to lift the edges. I deleted the edges using the channel. Then I made a new grey layer that I set to soft light and did a LOT of tweaking. Used clouds, texturizer (sanstone) and a pixelate filter until I liked what I saw.

The nail I'm disappointed with now, and will go back and adjust that. The blood looks okay to me. That was just done with a channel of text, lighting effects on a grey layer and then adjusting the curves for a glassy look. Altering the hue to bright red, changing the varioations to make it darker and more pronounced, then setting the layer to hard light. I hope that helps. Just this morning I went back to the file and made the black background transparent so the edges are gone.

Interesting suggestion, but I think I'll leave that out. A drop shadow might limit what colored backgrounds I could put the sig on with a realistic effect. The color of the piece of tape so far matches well with 4 different colored backgrounds that I've seen it on. Anyway, it's supposed to be nailed and taped right to the screen, so there really wouldn't be a visible shadow, but thanks for the suggestion.

Shield: I love it....I kept waiting for a tooth or hair.. <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/wink.gif">

I can see what you're saying about the nail but I think it might be simple for you to fix. The thing I noticed was that the nailhead didn't have the same angular perspective as the shank, and it seemed a bit "thick" (depth, not width) but I think both of those things might change completely if you just used a perspective transform on the nailhead layer?

just contracting the top and the right of the nailhead slightly should give it the appearance on the same angle I'd think.

That's no bitch at all though, because I think it looks great. <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/biggrin.gif">

Yeah, the perspective on the nailhead is off, but actually, there's a trick of the shadow that's making it look thicker than it actually is. See, I made a drop shadow for the whole nail that's going from where the nail meets the flesh and up and to the left, because it's supposed to look like the light is coming from below. Anyway, the shadow ended up being nearly right under the nail on the image, and it makes the head look thicker than it actually is supposed to look. So anyway I have to touch that up majorly, plus adjust the skin around the nail so it looks more like it's sagging off it.

I also tried adding hair, but gave up. I couldn't create a realistic looking hair, and also had trouble creating the dimpled connection for the hair with the skin. Instead I just made an eye. Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions and critques.. keep 'em coming.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but I made some alterations to my signature (including SIZE) and wanted you guys to see the difference. I'm V E R Y happy with the new nail, btw. It came out nice by luck. I uploaded it with the same name as my old sig, so actually all posts I've written with the old one should now have this new one. Thanks again!
