Crap! <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/mad.gif"> I accidently deleted the old topic. Hehe. That sucks. Ok my last post said that i wanted to create a screen that looks futuristic and technological. I want it to look like alien technology. Also tutorials on channels would hel because i dont quite uderstand them! <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif"> thanks!

Hey crono. Once again my 1st bit of advice is to go to Hands On. The Lighting effects tutes go into the use of channels quite extensively. I can't stress enough how relevant Hands On is to creating 3D looking interfaces. They're not like a lot of tutorials that show you how to make one certain thing, they show you methods and tecniques that carry over into all areas of graphic design.

The Glass tute will give you one method of making a screen as well, which if you tweak and play around with enough, you can transform to whatever shape/effect you're looking for (there are simpler ways, but I'm unsure where to find a tute off-hand).

Also, I think the same basic idea of the effect on your sig-pic (especially the earlier blue one that was a little rougher) would be a good thing to apply to your screen or interface somewhere.

i like your sig best Cr0n0. of the other two, i would have to choose the top one. but there is to much background around it, too much empty space. i would crop it just around the text. that might work...

I like the second one better, but it's rather large.

Anyway, here's something for you to check out... I found it on my own site actually... which I haven't updated in almost a year and it looks crappy. Anyway, I was fiddling with a console of my own and I made this but never finished it...

computer3.jpg

The way I amde the video screens on that was:

I had a rectangular selection that I made into one with rounded corners (easy enough, right?) I filled it with black and then made a new layer. On that layer, I shrank the selection about 3 to 5 pixels and feathered the edges.. I think mine were feathered 5, but you can vary that. Then I filled it with a light grey to a dark grey gradiant from the upper left to the upper right and messed with the layer options. Sorry that's kinda vague... it's been a while. I added a slight reflection of a window which I kept very very translucent, and did the dusty hand print by hand with a brush and also made it very translucent. Anything being put ON the screen can be done with a change in the layer options to give it that "on-screen" look. I hope this helps.

I hafta agree with DL tho, the Doc has some of the best tutorials around. Another good site to check out if your looking for your "console" might be Screamdesigns. http://www.screamdesign.com/graphics/photoshop/tips/interface/intfc13.html

Personally I hate these tutorials. There not very well explained for beginners and your pretty new at this, but I suggest going slowely and paying attention to what it says word for word. If you need help try to post it here, dont start a new topic, I dunno how it works but I think that costs the Doc space and is just plain annoying.

Also, www.eyeball-design.com , www.phong.com , and www.designsbymark.com have very good tutorials. I dont think theres an actual tutorial for just channels, but channels are needed for just about all of there more advanced tutorials so you'll learn by going through those nifty tuts.

Most importantly if you need help with Chemistry homework, check out this link right here http://ekcs.neric.org/~jbuckley/chemistryreview.html

Try and keep us posted with what progress your making with your interfaces and your beloved "console".

Thanks,
P.S. check out the chemistry site! Its helpful.

BEcause i need to know how to make that screen that u have there. Its one of the most important parts of what im making. What i would like to do also is make some kind of alien design around it to, lots of wires and other things. Thanks. BTW Human Shield, if u dont feel like posting it all here and would like to talk to me or even email me my email adress is 2NyCE4LyFE@quakeclan.net My ICQ UIN is 37874753 and my aol/aim screen name is Xl Cr0n0 lX with zero's not o's. Er, that screen in that image was made the same way as the other one. But I did describe one thing wrong. I used a radial gradiant.. not a linear one.

Now, if you're talking about the WHOLE console, well... wow, that's a long story. There are so many different parts to it. I still have the .PSD file if you'd like to take a look at it.

Just outta curiousity, are we all wasting our times helping you Cr0n0? I mean ive spent a good hour or so explaining things to you through AIM or ICQ, which i dont mind one might, Ive told you tutorials to help you and everyone in this Asylum seems to be trying there best to help you. I just want to know if your doing what we say or just looking at it and deciding its too hard for you and looking for a new angle to try. Youve had to have started 3 threads over the exact same console and everyones giving you help but still you dont seem to be making anything. No ones gonna draw it for you, i dont mind helping and Im sure no one else does but are we wasting our time? Hope you dont take this the wrong way.

No i read it and try it all out, but sometimes people give me info that i dont quite understan. When this happens I find out what id deals with(channels, layers, etc)and go to a tutorial and find out more about it so i can understand what he is trying to tell me. And i have only posted two threads and they are both diferent. First one was askin for tutorials and some suggestions and the second(this one)is to find out how to make a console. I would have continued with the other thread but it was locked due to imachurity. Well that about answers all your questions. I seriously am thankful for all your posts and im not wasting your time. Im just gathering info. After all im just a beginner so im not farmiliar with eveerything. I suggest you get a good PS book, I mentioned this to you before, I thought Photoshop 5/5.5 WOW was an excellent book for someone just starting out, I didnt think it was difficult and it goes indepth on a lot of things.

Check it out if you can

Here's a little console I made (I decided I kinda like it while I was making it. Once I add some detail, I might actually use it as an interface).
http://circleofblood.hypermart.net/console.jpg

Anyway, the only tools I used to make it are lighting effects, gaussian blur, and the airbrush. Each piece is basically a lighting effect touched up with the airbrush. I realize that the actual "screen" needs a bit of work...it looked a bit better, but I used a grayscale gradient that wouldn't save for the web. You should be able to figure out how to make the chrome bars and wires. As for the main outline part of the console. I first created the outline of it, then I chopped it up into 9 pieces. 4 pieces for the outside bevel, 1 piece for the flat part, and 4 pieces for the inside bevel. I cut at 45 degree angles along the corners and used a linear gradient in each piece (except the flat top part). Then I pieced it all back together and retouched with the airbrush to get the nice smooth corners on the inside. By the way, all that work was in an alpha channel. Then I just jumped back to my layer and render some lighting effects over that channel. Most of the white highlights are done in a new layer with the airbrush set to white and the layer blend set to dodge. It helps to keep those 9 alpha channels so you can load selection from them while doing the airbrushing. Makes it alot easier. Well, if you understood that, which I doubt you did, great!

i'm not sure if i like either .sig graphic, probably because neither really fit in with this area. they're such a sharp contrast between the design of the forum, that it's rather distracting.

well if you started out html programming now and you're 13.... in 3 years will you have any money worth noting? probably not. honestly i wouldn't plan on landing any jobs until you were old enough to drive a car, and by then all this stuff should be obsolete anyways.

The harsh, yet true reality shines through.

I wouldn't discount him though.

Had it been that at 13 I had the knowledge of what I could do with computers, at 16 I would have been in the money.

Initially knowing that you can actually do what you see in front of you is an awe inspiring moment.

If you put the time in now there is not telling where you will be in 3 years. That is a long time in the computer field. But I think that if you want to do graphics... well I don't see how that will change much in the future. You will still need to have an imagination, and an aptitude to do the stuff. The programs will just get easier to use (but then again AOL said that too).

Put the time in now, and I am sure it will pay off in the future don't be discouraged. At 13 you have a long time to learn.

hrm, i've had my very own computer since i was 6.. and i'm 19 now. so basically i've been using computers as long as cr0n0 has been alive. of course i've only been messing with graphical stuff for 5 years now, but i've never been interested in the money side.

some people are just really good at selling themselves, whereas i don't even want to try. it'd be nice to get money for doing various design stuff, you just have to have the nature to do it.

and yeah, if you work on your visual foundations now and get familiar with the computer world, you'll be set for any new innovation i believe.

i will be surprised if you have enough money to buy an old used pinto by the time you are able to drive.

i say this because when i was 13 i spent all of my money on video games down at the local pizza place. everyday my friends an i would walk a little less than a mile for some crappy pizza buffet and some video games. i dont even want to talk about the s*#$ i got into by the time i turned 16.

just dont do what i did, save your money and study. i cant even imagine where i would be if i sat my ass down to learn something back then. you seem to be on the right track so far, just keep it that way ehh...

Just expiriment with everything. If you keep following tutorials... well.. you really dont learn anything from it.
