Hello,
I am new to the forum and to Photoshop 5. Up till now I have used Corel Draw and Photopaint.
Can somebody tell me what advantages there are (if any) to using Photoshop? I had great expectations, but am finding it hard to change over.

Ann:

Corel Draw came with my Dell but to be honest, I never saw the need to use it. Photoshop always was my preference. In my opinion its just about the very bestest art program there is. Hmm this post is no help whatsoever is it? Maybe Ill play around with Corel in a lil while and then make an actual comparasion. If you still having trouble with Photoshop though, check out different tutorials. Mark has great ones at www.designsbymark.com and the Doc has some of the best at www.ozones.com

Well... I know some people who use coral draw and do amazing things with it. I haven't used it, the graphics I have seen are comprable.

I think what makes photoshop so much better, is that availability of tutorials, the lighting effects filter, and this forum.

So combined togeather I think photoshop owns.

I worked with Corel Draw/Photopaint, and I must say you can do some neat tricks with it but when it comes to preformance and stability it is way behind Photoshop. But I must admit that Draw is a bit better than Illustrator, but the problem is that Corel Draw/Photopaint is not really supported on the Mac, so many people won't see it's true strength. Over all Photoshop is very hard to beat but Draw/photopaint might be a good and cheaper alternative

PS

funtions like Stamp tool, some filters and the layout are different, I must say that Photopaint has a bit messy layout, while Photoshop, when you get used to it, is really a wonderful program to use.

I think WarMage nailed one of the earlier large pros of PS over Photopaint, the Lighting Effects Filter. That one filter factors in almost any and every interface design, as well as realistic texturing.

Aside from that, I'll start off by saying I actually use both Corel and Adobe products, having tested a lot of the Graphic Suites that have come down the pipe. I prefer PhotoShop for many reasons over PhotoPaint, not the least of which being the availability of complex filters (though I don't use many at all), the existence of recordable actions, the power and latitude of the type engine, the seamless integration with other products, the ease of the user interface, and the plethora of information, and PS professionals around.

Now that being said, I do prefer Draw over Illustrator, merely for the fact that the learning curve isn't as steep (though I'd love a more "Adobe" interface)

And there's my half a cent after taxes.
