ok.. sorry i think i didnt manage to explain to good!!
I have a layer with the background picture.
and another where i used the gradient tool from transparent to a blue color... www.cheezyboys.com/gradient/alpha3800.jpg

(its 23kb)

it looks ok if i run 32bit color on my computer, but if i go down to 16 it doesnt look to good anymore!

hope this makes more sense...

I'm not seeing the problem. There is a slight banding at 32bit, that gets slightly more exaggerated at 16bit. It's certainly not ugly on my system at either bit-depth.

Banding is normal with a long gradient. Remember you're spreading a limited number of colors over a lot of pixels. Pure black to pure blue, for example, only offers 256 discreet values (0,0,0 to 0,0,255). If you spread such a gradient over 760 pixels (the width of your image), each color will be shown in a 'band' 3 pixels wide.

Many gradients are even more limited. (0,128,192) to (0, 255, 255) is a sort of deep blue to sort of bright aqua gradient. It only offers 128 steps in the green channel and 64 in the blue. Spreading this gradient over more than 100 pixels would start to look bad.
