Friends,
Does anyone out there know how to reduce/eliminate newton rings from scanned glossy photos (I'm not doing the scans...they're recieved by me as digital files from some very humid places). I need to produce a photoshop action that can address this problem globally to a large no. of pictures; no time (or money) for individual attention, such as cloning. I only need to address newton rings in saturated areas (highlights). Thanks in advance!
P.S. I've tried applying median/blur filters to duplicate layers and adjusting opacity with improvement at the expense of overall quality...any other ideas? RP

Oh, scanned photos of images printed as 4 colour process images, yech. "Newton Rings" are those pretty looping bands that occur when the pattern from one area (the 4/c printed dots) intersect with the other pattern (the square arrangement of pixels). It can be pretty if you were trying to get this effect, but annoying if you just need the image.

I usually insist the image be scanned at as high a rez as is feasable, 300-600 dpi is common. I'll start with a wide gaussian blur, maybe 3-4 pixels, and follow with an "Unsharp Mask" filter, settings (unknown, but high). You need to experiment with this a few times, but you should be able to blur the edges, restore them (all at high rez), and then re-size the image smaller and get a good effect. I used to have an action for this, but they're all unique depending on the quality of the originals.

She is cute, but in a wouldn't-look-at-her-twice-in-the-mall kind of way.

I'll take Laticia Casta any day...

Doc, thanks for your swift and on topic reply...BTW, what I have are newton rings, interference patterns of light caused when two surfaces, one flat and one convex, are separated by a distance approaching the wavelength of light...this is not uncommon when glossy photos are scanned on a flatbed. Sorry to quibble but I believe what you described are moire' patterns...not a big deal, really, the effects are the same: unwanted patterns on an image. Your solution is simple and elegant; maybe what I'm trying to do is not practical in Photoshop. I'd like to suppress the rings locally without compromising global detail, using a batch action to process 100's of images at a pop. Unfortunately I cannot control the quality or resolution of the scans...thanks again for your help. RP

Yes, I believe you were! But now that someone who actually knows something about the subject answered, let's continue!

Renee what's here face is damn cute indeed. I would most definately look at her twice in the mall or anywhere else....I can't help it I fall for that "cute-helpless-lonely-angry-girl" thing....ya know?

of course I'm more partial to say...Selma Hayak (ever see her in "The Hunchback of Notre Dame?").

Ah, don't mind the children, they're not really dissing you, just continuing a long drawn out conversation, spanning several threadsw! ;-)

I *was* disucssing moire patterns, wasn't I? Newton rings are tough to deal with, as the image effects sprawl across wide ranges of highlights and shadows. I used to have a piece of plastic, mostly transparent, but with a slight matte finish. Before scanning a glossy phortograph, I'd place the matte plastic down, the photo on top of that, and then scann through that filter. Fine vellum tracing paper can do the same thing for you. Seems to me you may have to go back to the source and get thos folks to scan better, you may never get rid of those rings with just photoshop.
