Make a line of width 5 or whatever width you want the stripes to be. Select a piece of the stripe, and make the height of the selection 10, or double whatever width of stripe you want. Then go to Edit, Define Pattern, then deselect and go to Edit, Fill, and Select pattern from the drop down menu.

But, of course, if you just need the image to use as a background for a page, you only need a small image that will tile to create the stripes.

Say you want the stripes to be a height of 10 pixels each. Create a new file, 10 pixels by 10 pixels and fill it with one of your colors. Then change your background color (on the toolbar) to your other color. Go to Image > Canvas Size, change the height to 20 pixels and under Anchor, select the top middle button. Now you have an image that will tile to create stripes.

Technically, all you need is a 1x20 portion of that image, but on many machines, it will take a second or two to refresh the browser window if it has to tile a small image very much. In fact, I would probably use an image larger than the 10x20 we just created to ensure a quick display on machines with slower video cards.

To create that using what we just did, use mbridge's method. Select the whole canvas and choose Edit > Define Pattern. Create a new file, this time 60x60. Choose Edit > Fill and select Pattern. And since the image only has 2 colors and is made of horizontal stripes, the resulting GIF file won't be very large at all.

I did this at one time the old fasioned way.

Made a line, copied it and moved it over (again)

What I have done though is made a couple of scanline template psds that I use constantly. They are just in black and then I can recolor them and mess with the opacity a bit.

whenever I comeup with a new consistent image be they lines, boxes whatever I always save a big psd with them (actually one psd with several layers)

saves work in the long run

I think you'll like this one if you work with tiled patterns often:

For scanlines:

Make a separate layer.
zoom in to 400% or whatever you think is best.
select the pencil tool.
make one black pixel. make a white pixel above it.
Select both pixels.
Click edit->Define pattern
choose paint bucket tool
in 'paint bucket options' window choose by 'contents' <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/tongue.gif">attern
Deselect.
make a new layer.
use the paint bucket tool.

Works with ANY selection. tiles nicely.

An interesting alternate method, that produces softer lines:

Fill the whole image with the color you want the lines to be.
Convert to Lab color (Image
