Alright, this shouldnt be here. Any Mad Scientists feel free to move this over to the 3D modeling forum(i think thats the name) if you dont want it her.

Since everyone else is getting sigs I felt like making one myself and theres been a lot of talk about rhino lately so I d/l that and started using it. I figured enuff of it out to make a fairly decent sig but I still dont understand how to apply a texture to it. I was just exporting it to Photoshop and using the paint bucket but then it screws up my shading. Can somone please let me know how I can apply a texture. Im not asking for a six page tut but any help is appreciated ...

Oh just so you dont think Im too lazy I started reading some tuts I found on someones site, not the ones that came with it, and it hasnt covered it so Im lost ...

Ok, this is what Ive been doing. I make my image in Rhino, crappy yes, and keep the colors really light. I copy to clipboard and then paste it in Photoshop. I think take a copy of the original layer. I add the texture I want to the first layer then set the top layer to color burn and I pretty much get what I want, but well thats the dumb way to do it. Any thoughts on a better way?

Rhino can't render. Sorry brother
You're gonna need a program that can render your image, and make it look proper right away. I use 3d studio max, but Bryce works too, and I think theres possibly a free-ware program that can do it for you.

If theres no chance in doing that, or you really want to do it in photoshop. I'd do just what you're doing, apply the texture on a layer above the shape, and toy with the settings. Usually for texturing, I find that using 3 or 4 layers, set to different layer styles, and different opacities, I can get a much better effect then with one layer.

Another thing, when you're rendering your model in rhino, make sure you play with the light sources. If you use the lights properly, sometimes you can even manage to get the POS renderer to render how a normal 3d program would. And make sure theres contrast between the edges/corners, and the surfaces. So it looks proper.

If you wana be a big man, and try applying the textures while in rhino, and then using lights to make it look good without photoshop. Select the mesh you want the texture on, and click on object properties (multi-colored circle on the tool bar at the top). Then.. well, you'll see.

Sorry, Im bored now... if you want more, post a reply, and I'll type more tomarrow.

Hi Dan and Jestah,

What is Rhino? Where did you get it?

This forum is the first place I ever heard of it.

I assume from the images I see that it is a 3D wireframe generating program.

Thanks.

Carl.

Its a 3d modeling program, it uses mainly NURBS, and does it very well. Much better then Max or Lightwave (imho). But it can't render worth crap. Check out this page to learn about it, and d/load the demo (or buy the full version).

I've never seen a trial version. But you can borrow one from a friend for 30 days (if someone you know has it, and is willing to lend you the hardware lock). That's because you get 30 days before you have to authorize it

Or you can tweak the regestry and give yourself a few million days, but I wont say how, here.. sorry

Dan: Im not having a problem with the texture what-so-ever. Im just curious though, how do I go about changing the background to something?

To change the background color, right click on render, and it will bring up the render options page. Or click on options, then on the render tab.

You can add a background bitmap (wont be able to see it when you render), by click View > Background Bitmap > Add.

To make an image a background, I make a plane (type plane in command box) that is the size that my image will be, then rotate it so it is facing the right direction, and place it behind the rest of the stuff in the image. Or you could put it on a different layer, but I don't want to get into that..
