Select the Red Channel....Duplicate it...Select All.....Copy.

Go back to your Layers...Paste. Save As.

Voila..just the red channel.

I'm sure there's other ways, but that's just the way I've done it in the past.

Not sure I understand the question. If you want to put some image into the red channel (crafty technique), copy the image to the clipboard and paste into the red channel. Just be aware it will be grayscale, and cropped to the red channel dimensions.

If you want is to save the contents of the red channel as a new grayscale file, you can do as DG suggests, or you can select the channel and, from the pop-out menu at the top right of the channels palette, select duplicate channel. In the dialog that appears, select new file.

Bingo.

On your channels palette, the one with the RGB and alpha channels, click the little arrow pointing right in the upper-right hand corner beneath the close palette button. Then click on "Split Channels". Three new docs should pop up, one for each channel. The names of the new docs will indicate which channel is which. For example, the red channel of super.jpg will be super_R.jpg.

Waaazaaa!
