hhmmm....this looks almost like a 'stone' texture. I think perhaps a sandstone (maybe a concrete?) type of texture, with some noise added to it, might just create the look you want. Personally, I'd be tempted to add some really tight fractals to it, for a more 'organic' look, then apply it to my shapemap / heightmap.

Yeah, that would be cool. In that case *I* would want it to be a little more on the organic side, so I would add fractals to the 'stone' & noise mix. You'll have to post what you achieve, it'll be neat.

Those images were done in 3d studio max, and the green texture you see really isn't to complicated. The first thing to do, is find a picture of a lizard, or something else with the texture you want. Make sure there is a large, uninterupted area of it. Crop the image down to just the texture you like. Use one of the various techniques to make this a tiling image. Now, desaturate and save it.

Now, make your model in whatever 3d program you're using, and set the color/specularity and everything else to match the tone you want, then use the image you just created as a bump map. In 3d studio max, you will usually need to apply UVW mapping to get it to render the texture properly.

That's a fractal, tho I'd not use that one, too much of a pattern.

I'd use it one of two ways. I'd make the fractal, 'stone', and noise all into seperate heightmap, shapemap, or distort maps depending on the exact look. The other way would be to make a height/shap/distortmap from all three. I'd try both ways to be honest, 'cause they'll both turn out different.
The reason I'd use the fractal is because the 'stone' and noise are going to look almost pattern-like. The human mind is great at finding patterns that aren't there. If I add the fractal into the mix, it's gonna break up that pattern even more, and create a more 'organic' look to the texture. If you look around you'll see lots of fractal like and fractal patterns in imagery. Dig around on line, I'm willing to bet that you can find a fractal generating program or even pics of fractals you could use. You don't have to use fractals to break up the 'pattern' you could use other things, but I usually turn to fractals.

I'm going to bed now. VP, where did you say the nurses residence was? Hey, I never said I was gonna sleep.

Okay..first, a ###WARNING###: The following image link is over 230k 28.8ers go get some coffee and a smoke after clicking

Dino Skin

Okay, I went with classic Dinosaur skin (done fast, and poorly, but go with me on this..heh), not too bright, not too saturated, and decently "scaly". I'll try a fast explanation of what I did, and with the method, you can play down the scales a lot.

Bottom Layer , Render Clouds with a deep green for the background colour, and a lighter yellow/white tone for the foreground colour.

Flip to Channels. Render clouds, play with the brightness and contrast. Load the channel, Flip back to Layers, make a new Layer and fill with black. Play with the opacities you like and the blending modes.

Flip back to Channels. Render clouds. Pixellate with the Crystallize Filter (play with your settings for desired, blah blah blah). Stylize with the Find Edges Filter. Play with all the crap you should already be playing with (get your minds out of the gutter). Load your edges Channel (and either Select Inverse, or don't..depends on how you want the "scales" to look).

Create a new Layer....fill the edges selection (I did the Select Inverse part before, so I fill the "cracks" with black here). Once again..PLAY!

Now do this classic double duplicate Layers, keep one black, make the other white, do a blur, offset the black one for the shadow of the raise scales, offset the white one as the highlight....and do the Hokey Pokey.

Voila..the base for some lizard skin....or at least the general concepts to get there. As always play with each layer, each step, and such, and adapt it for what you want.

F1's idea for fractal use is a great one too...should help give you that more chaotic organic feel.

I put the huge file up, in case people want to use it for texture wrapping. Oh, and I made it seamless...but ask Dan how to do that, I'm tired....heh.

Hope it helps.

Peter

Well, I have a lot of lizards in my house, all kinds, and there is one thing that stands out on all of them, they DO have patterns, lots of patterns. The scales, the colors, all patterned. If you really want a realistic effect, don't loose the patterns.

-Having said that, take a look at some lizard pics...
Here are some in my house
Here's another site I scrounged up

Hope that helps,
Happy lizard skin making.
