Preserved Topic: Time To Smell The Roses?!?!

Something I'd noticed before, but hadn't given much consideration to when comparing 6.0 and 5.5 was the fact that I seemed to be doing a bit more waiting around when I had to work large images i 6.0

Ran across this link though, and it got me a bit bothered, considering these are the benchmarks for a Pentium4, and not even the differences in times that most people will see with Athlons, PentiumIIIs, and even PIIs.

I've been mostly impressed with 6.0 so far (other than a few issues, like the color dodging etc.) but I HAD noticed this...and I know I will from now on.

So, are more options and toys in PS worth the time increase for even the old standard operations?

I had noticed that too DG. I personally don't work with a lot of big images but I was messing around with one for twitch's new site and was wondering if I needed to restart or something.

I personally like the new toolbar at the top. I'm still trying to figure out if I like the way the text is done now or not. I definitely like the layer styles palette but it does take a while to open up for me, even with 192 MB of ram.

I guess I am willing to forgive the slight increase in time for the new tools. Of course, I don't use PS as much as the majority of the people in here...

I agree, I have noticed a slight slugishness when accessing layers, I also find the internet access crap annoying.

I also had problems installing the upgrade, I had to clear all previous version and install from stratch.

As of speed, I think we sometime get too hung up on speed. You have to drink coffee or snack sometime. I just think back to the days of trying to running Photoshop on a MAC II or maybe raytracing animations on and old amiga 2000. Talk about slow!!

I often have to work with images with an image space of over 75-100 megabytes at times, and there is a definate increase in wait time between many different tasks. And by god I am still double clicking layers to rename them, causing that slow, slow layer effects menu to plod it's way in until I can cancel it. I really want my double click layer rename back =\

Yeah! That one irks me too Tycho! I had forgotten about that one.

So, what I want to know:

Is the upgrade worth it?

I know this has been discussed earlier, but I'd like a more recent input, now that people have had the opportunity to use the program more. I'm not that an advanced "photoshopper", and I feel comfortable toggling between Illustrator for the vector/bezier-stuff and PS.

Any comments?

Worth it, werth it, wurtheet, wirth et, get it. Its an impressive upgrade. It just has quirks.

This skeers me. PS6 is in the mail and I already have trouble on my home PC with 5.5's speed at times. I'm no hardware wizard so I wonder if anyone can hep me... my home PC has a 500mhz P3, 256MB RAM but a 66mhz bus and 4mb onboard video card. Does anyone know if this bus speed or video card could be the source of my occassional PS grief, slowdowns, lockups etc. It's had the same problems under W98, NT4 and W2K.

I'm getting a new behemoth at work within the month but I wonder if anyone could give me a recommendation on my home PC, should I chuck it for another with a better video card and bus speed? BTW I've tried putting another PCI video card in but can't get it to work and there's no AGP slot.

Hmm, well I've been dragging my feet, going through yet another learning curve for a few dubious upgrade/enhancements what have you, it's not for me, not in any big hurry! But, I'm cranky and old-fashioned in regards to new software, always have been. New HARDware, now that's another story! I just want my old obsolete programs to run insanely fast, kind of like filling your old VW beetle with 190 octane airplane fuel, woo! (Did that once. Wow! What a ride! Seized the engine about an hour later. Freed it up, seized it again. It was an old, cheap car, what the hell.) I loved that car.

smell the roses?.. hmmmm... I prefer Lilacs and even if I could get PS to run faster I dont think I could create faster??? *ponders* *mops* *ponders more*
