sorry for a stupid question but im the complete opposite in ps what you qould call a guru.

how can i replace a color in an image for another.
example: i have a text document with an orange background, which i want to make white....

I'm assuming that the image is flat. If that is the case, make a mask, that includes everything you don't want colored. Make your mask into a selection, and fill away. Deselect, and do the minor fix-ups that you always have to do in a project of this kind.

You could also selct the color using the magic want, changing your tolerance to grab what you need, and then delete it, replace it, fill it, whatever. Another option is Photoshop's built in "Replace Color" function which is under "Image" in the submenu "Adjust". From there, you select a certain color, and select a color rto replace it with. Th only problem is that it will replace EVERY instance of black, not just the background.

expanding on what has been said already....

with F1's method I would suggest working on a new layer above your original layer/image. By dooing this you can preserve the original... and delete the new layer if you dont like the results.

Also you could try adding a hue/saturation adjustment layer and by defining your area by a selection using either a selection tool or by creating a mask you can change the colour of just the selected area, again via the adjustment layer and not directly changing the original image.(What is nice about using an adjustment layer is that you can go back to it at any time and modify again if you want too)

Using Photochilds method of 'adjustment--replace colour can also be used in conjunction with a good selection.. helps isolate the area better than just using its internal selection tool.. that depends if you are trying to change a broad spectrum of colour of the whole image or just in a local area....

With all the methods, you should always try a method that allows you not to 'destroy' the original.. this is termed non destructive editing and is imho a good habit to get in too.... makes updates and edits later alot easier.....
