does anyone know how to make it look like paint chipping off of metal like this pic:

doesnt have to look just like that.. but something close, ive ben trying to figure it out for a wile. thanks

like draw them and stuff...., basically draw a jagged darker area, make the top edge dark/bottom edge light, then around the outside, airbrush the top lighter and the bottom darker to give it some depth...

that will give you something like this:



or did you want me to program you a peeling paint filter?

dude how long did that take you?
i couldnt keep my mouse that stable for the whole crack, do you know of some tut that shows you how to draw in things with detail like that?

No more than 5 minutes...the secret to using your mouse is just to zoom in like crazy (control++ is the shortcut to zoom in).

more questions for ya :-)
with the air brush do you fade it or anything
and how many layers u use/ what were they for that crack you did?

The lighter top part with the airbrush is white, set to screen at a very low opacity. The darker part is black set to multiply at really low opacity.

Layers (from bottom to top): Background texture, Inner Shadow, Main Color, Black Crack Edges, White Crack Edges, Top Highlights, Bottom Shadows

nope, no filters. i need tips on how i can make it more real

not a bad start --

- try to make the edge a little more jagged.

- make the inner area a bit darker...inner shadow more pronounced

- make the outside shadow come right up to the edge of the crack (look at mbridge's) and the top highlight come down to the edge too.

- try colors that aren't so reminiscent of baby puke

Yea...what dl44 said. Another thing that might help is to load the transparency of the crack as a selection. Select Inverse, and then do you outside airbrushing, that way, you can go right to the edge.

Add noise, monochromatic...looks like gaussian distrobution.

i just wanted to know the diff between the airbrush and the paint brush tools

i believe that the main difference is that the areas you spray with the spraycan get darker the longer you hold it there....

ok, heres my new paint chip, it looks WAY better then my old baby barf one

That looks more like a piece of metal getting fucked with, metal is super elastic and will deform easily(hrm, most metal, unless its been hardened or is iron).

Paint is hard and brittle, so it won't deform as much as it will just break, and create super jaggies and whole bare spots, instead of bent shapes, also a lot of cracks will form. Just some drunken thoughts about making paint chipping off of metal.

depends what kind of paint you're dealing with and what type of surface it's on.

Many paints dry like a thin sheet of rubber, and stay relativeil soft.

Definately a big improvement on the work there cr. My best advice now is to go find some chipped paint somewhere and spend some time looking at it....make a couple of sketches to work from.

Will give you a much better idea of how to form your shapes and what details to add.
