Here we go again! I want to see what you think of this simple creation. The only filter used was gaussian blur, other than that it's mostly feathered selections and a few layers. Quite simple technique.

The dark at the top is a little dark, and the reflection doesn`t seem consistent with the light source, but the refraction is great. Gotta go w/ taxon and Mage on the *bead* thing.

Really nice tho. The colors blend well. Smooth transitions.

Thanks guys, here are two more with the same technique.

I guess I could write a tutorial if people want to learn how to do these. Soon!

Hey rotren - those are nice!

Want to take it to the next level? Ask yourself - would a transparent object lit with a fairly bright, hot light (as suggested by the specular highlight) cast a solid shadow?

Nope, didn't think so. I think you've got the glass down nicely. Now attend to some characteristics beyond the ball itself and you've got something real strong goin' on!

Thanks Steve, I guess the shadows there might a bit strong, but I do think you get a bit of dark shadow anyway.

Here's another kind:

Again! hehe...

Lookin good there rotren but I think the main reason it doesn't quite look right is that it's quite un-realeastic to have a glass ball sitting in a room without anything else there.

If you want to get more into reflections and stuff there's a great article at FARP (Fantasy Art Resource Progect) on Transperance and reflection here

Enjoy

rotren, try making the light angle from a different position other than 90 degrees. Then make the dropshadow in that same direction. (try using the photoshop default gobal angle). I think that will make it lookd more like a sphere.
