Preserved Topic: Invert problem

on the ozone tutorial of making the ozone image with the fire background, i go to invert "the mask copy" and the background is still black, while the ozone text looks like it turns black, help?

helps if i deselect the image...
but another problem arose
i tried everything but when i select any images (layers / channels) select -> modify -> expand isnt highlighted, so i cant use it

wondering if he's stating the obvious, threep points out:
"if you are selecting the entire image, then the selection border is right on the edge of the canvas, and you can't expand it. maybe that's the problem. try deselecting, choosing rectangular marquee (just press 'm'), select a little box, and see if you can expand that one.
