Anyone know a tutorial/have any ideas on how to do realistic Ice? Not like Ice cubes but Ice for an Interface like jagged edges and stuff like its frozen/frosted and made out of solid ice.

Well you see, the thing is..... Why would an interface be made out of Ice?? Frost/snow covered metal perhaps, but Ice just doesn't make sence...

ACO, you're on the right way already. Jagged edges, a little wind, some layer blending and a well-laid out transparency are the key words here. Try playing around with randomness. Oh, and it helps if you draw something on paper before actually performing it in PS

Not the greatest, but all i could find at the moment. See if u can adapt them to suit yer needs.

Wow, I never thought I'd read a thread where someone actually attempted to stamp out creativity... All these damn unrealistic interfaces on the web with blinky flashy lights and all this rust (don't they take better care of their damn interfaces?) ... next, you're gonna want to make an interface out of spaghetti! Get real! :P

Hey Drac I liked that one. Now Im not sure if yooz people were kidding about why you'd want to make an Ice Interface but I think one should be allowed any means of creativity. Think about it? A small piece of paper with
sticky stuff on it to stick all over the place? What a stupid idea... thus creating POST ITS.

Ice is cool. no pun intended. heehee

ACO, you`re not too far off, there. Get your icecicles going the same direction, lighten the blue up, and add some highlights to make it glossy...The ones on the vertical edges should hug the edge where water ran down, froze , built up,... well, you know what I mean ?

I hate it when people assume I`m stupid.

At least give me a chance to prove it.

I did have other things I was going to say after my first comment?? But your right, it did sound rather stupid of me.

I thought I did say them but their not there now . Halfway through the post I remembered some Ice type stuff I did a while back and went searching for it. I was also reading and replying to several other posts at the same time and must have just switched windows and hit reply out of habbit (I get that flood control thing happening a lot so sometimes I have to wait).

The main point I was going to make is that I would be ~difficult~ to create a ~realistic~ looking Ice interface. I was then going to crap on about how It would be easier to go for a slightly more cartoony look, which I was going to back up with some images but I just forgot . Although I did think it was a little rude to pull me up on this matter when you didn't bother to offer any input on the subject youself.

Sorry I that post came across as mean or insulting, I didn't mean it that way. I did try and make things better by poasting this image:

Which was my 10 min attempt at realeastic Ice. I can't remember exactly how I did it of the top of my head but If anyone wants to then just ask. It would look better If I removed some of the greyer tones and made it apear a little more wet but I don't think it's too bad.

Again, I'm sorry if my first poast seemed mean. But I guess I got what I deserved

EDIT:

Oh, Almost missed your poast there ACO. Ok, this is a little rough but it might help....

The ground work for this image was done with the lighting effects filter. I used a channel with the basic shape with a tiny bit of slightly blured noise for some texture. (I did the cracks later).

I used the lighting efects on a laryer that was flat 50% grey. 2 spotlights, one slightly blue, the other completly white. I also think it was 100% Shiney, and -100% (Plastic) ther rest were set to 0, except for the channel height which was about 50 or so.

Next I used the dodge tool along the edges to make them white, and the burn tool to make the drop-off a little more contrasting.

I then used the smudge tool at about 60 to 90%, 1 to 2 px size brush for the cracks. This will also give you some nice looking scratches as the white edges will smudge back into the ice.

For the other tiny scratches I use the airburush with a 1px white brush here and there, just play untill you get what you want. Remember it's Ice, almost all scratched will be pure white.

I also used the hue/saturation to get rid of some of the dull greys which made it look more like ice. Then I went back over the really blue areas with the spunge tool (desaturate) so they didn't stand out too much.

Some of the final touces that made it look a lot more like ice (I think it looks more like hard packed snow but whatever) were done by using the sharpen tool along the edges.

This is also a croped version of the image, there were some areas of the image which the lighting effects just didn't do justice to .

Hope it helps.
