Okay, this is what I've got so far. Any suggestions?

I've never seen one with such vibrant colour. Needs to be muted a bit, I think.

Also have to get your hands dirty a bit. Above the balloon on the right, there are some cells that are chunked together. Nothing the Line tool can't handle.

And the extraction looks too clean around the ballons. All those jagged edges and all of a sudden nice clean edges. Hmmm... how to fix? I think save the extraction in an Alpha, Crystalize the Alpha, use that to crystalize the balloons. Then Select > Invert and then do the rest. But I'm not sure.

The *relief* comes across as being a bit to deep. My wife and I have done a fair amount of mosaic work... stained glass & concrete/grout. And I've examined some very old mosaic work in Jerusalem... there's not much relief and the peices tend to be a bit closer together. In our work there's approx 1/8th inch between pieces.

To give it perhaps a bit more realism... you may want to try a texture in the grout lines... I'll see if I can 'post' an image to give you an idea... but not right now... not enough time...

Hope that helps.

Warjournal: I was agonizing on how to work out the separations. I wanted to put together something quick to illustrate the concept. I figure the colors were too vibrant, but I didn't want it to be washed out either.

NoJive: I've been trying to get some texture into the grout, but with the spacing only a few pixels at most, none of that detail shows through at all. If you have some pictures of that work I could study, that would be great.

Moaiz: Yeah, I understand what you're saying and I tried it at first but I lost a lot of detail. The mosaics I remember had each tile as mostly solid colors and the image would be made of that. I'm still working on a way to make each tile a single color so we'll see.

Well, I wanted to write this up as a GN tut as soon as I can get the technique perfected. Mostly, the problems I've run into are the size of the tiles and the loss of detail in the original picture. Again, if any of you guys have any mosaic picture, I would love to see them.

The reason I didn't do too much dirty work (airbrushing and tweaking details) was becuase I wanted to make a tut and I needed it to be as simple as possible. Thank you for your suggestions, and I'm hoping I'll get some more.
