Hi,

Sort of a "reverse" flatten image. I want to automatically separate all non-contiguous elements on a single layer into as many individual layers as necessary. How do I do this?

Thanks!

I would use the Lasso (L) tool. Just circle the non-continuous element and hit ctrl + j (layer via copy).

Thanks for your replies.

That's too bad; it doesn't seem like a difficult thing to program. It would be for Photoshop to simply identify all the unique, i.e. non-contiguous elements in a layer, the same way the magic wand works on the quick mask, and then separate all of those elements into their own layers.

Hasta Luego,
Greg

Oops, I should clarify, I'm using a transparent layer.

It's an overlay of buttons that I'd like to have all of them on their own layers. For now my trick has been a combination of your suggestions.

I'm using the magic wand set at 255 tolerance. The buttons are on a transparent layer, so the transparency 'stops' the selection at the edges of the button. I just click anywhere inside the button and it's selected, then shift-ctrl-j to send it to its own new layer.

Ho-hum.

Most things that don't seem difficult to program are nearly impossible to program, with a few exceptions.
