Hello,

I have layer with black stuff on it.... i have another layer with black stuff on it (writing)... i want the writing to come through as white where it intersects stuff on the black layer (like a checkerboard effect). How can I do this?

Thanks!

Sounds like a job for Blending mode Screen or Multiply. Might have to change Layer order.

Maybe some quick Alpha (intersect) work will do the trick.

Ahhh.... that's about the extend of my thinking capacity right now.

A clipping group could work as well. Need more details.

For example, do the Layers in question have transparency? Is the white the only thing on the Layer and everything else is transparent? Or are there other opaque pixels to worry about?

Hard to tell without seeing it/them or having more details details details.

Clipping group? Does that sound good?

Karl:
What's on those layers where it isn't black? Is it black on white? Black on gray? Black on transparent? That might have some bearing on what you can do with blending modes. Thoe only one I can thnk of that would reverse the tonality is of course difference, but the backgrounds will be affected too...

threep offers his solution:
"if i have interpreted what you've said correctly, than this should work:
1) click on the layer that isnt text.
2) now, crtl+click the layer.
3) now, crtl+alt+shift click the text layer.
4) now, press crtl+i.
presto!
i think if you did it the other way around - with the text layer selected, it wouldnt work unless the text was rendered - converted from vector text to pixels.
and alternative for step 4 is to open a new layer, and fill the selected areas in white. your choice."

text in white; blending mode set to difference. Try it.

Here is something I tried...

I made it a while ago for my school's lit mag...It has similar effects to what you were looking for but I just played around with layers and their settings (dodge, normal, etc...)

Thanks for all the help folks!

Say, where is the "calculation" menu???
..and, I tried to the ctrl shift of the layer, the the ctrl-alt shift select of the text layer, then inverse the colors, but the black turned to greyish black.... so that seemed to almost work, however i had a "yucky" pixelation of the edges going on...

Okay got it! Thanks, and this is a great example of Channels!!!
I managed to succesfully use the calculations command to achive an alpha channel of a subtraction of the black and white colors, then managed to fill a new layer with the results of the channel selection.
I have to admit, I thought there would be a simpler way, but I guess not.
