I'm trying to figure out how to send pictures to other people when I'm done creating them. Most people don't have photoshop so they cant open anything I make. Also the files are so big that most of them I can't send out anyway. I'm really new at this and if any one out there could help me out, I'd really appreciate it.

Photoshops file format (.psd) is a native file format to PS. There are some other graphic apps that will open .psd files, however, for sharing images, you much better off converting the image to a more generic optimization file format such as .jpg or .gif

To do this you can do a "save as a copy" from PS or depending on what version of PS you are using , there is also a 'save for web'' feature, that allows you to see the different levels of optimization via a preview window. If you choose .jpg (better for photographs) thenyou are allowed to pick a qu****y setting.. higher the qu****y, less the optimization, or if you pick .gif (better for lline art or image with sudden colour changes/fewer colours) , then you pick the number of colours, more colours , less optimization (max 256).

Most people should have an application on their desktops that can view either .jpgs or .gifs.

.bmp (win bitmaps) is also an option , but I have never had much luck getting these file types small enough.

so there ya go.. save as .jpg, or .gif.. that should work for ya

Hiya Rick (bows down to welcome another newbie)

You say you have trouble sending images.....

Is it possible that you are not "flattening" the images in PS so that you are unable to save it as a .GIF or .JPG?
So when you save, you are automatically saving it as a PSD (as it has editable layers) which not many ppl can view it.

Hint:

  • Always save as a PSD first in case you want to use/change the image or layers again
  • Click on Layer, Flatten image and then File, Save As (always "save as" so you don't overwrite the PSD file with the "flat" file)
  • Click on .GIF / .JPG / whatever other format you want - everybody can view the first 2 formats
  • When it asks you (for .GIF) number of colors, try minimise the amount of colours without destroying the image too much, you can preview the image underneathe the "indexed color" box
  • When it asks you (for .JPG) the quallity, from small to large, try to go for the small without destroying the image too much, you can preview the image underneathe the "JPEG options" box

Hope this helps
(don't ask me why the word qu****y comes up in stars - thats why i spelt it quallity)
